I really like fishing on the big beach at shields, I probably fish there more than anywhere else and I am getting to know it better and Ive had 7 different species off the beach but not consistently, and I still cant find any really good spots. I've found low tide-up to be best for me, with a little bit of see on, about 3-4 foot.

Can anyone point me to a decent hole or gulley, or got any other tips for the big beach.

my mate caught a Turbot in the sand gulley/holes which run along the base of the pier seaward side. Cast to the right of the rocks. At the time my mate was on pier but I cannot see why beach would not be good.

Tried their once to get out of the wind, just on the rock edge below the hole in the wall on a big tide. Looked a canny shot at the time with a bit of a sea on and the rip pulls you in the right direction toward the rock edge. Unfortunately didn't spend as long as I would have liked to as got called away back home. Blanked but will defo give it another shot when it looks right

A wise man, called Andy coincidently, who used to work at Reedsport, and always fished the big beach, told me the beach fishes best on a big low, less than 1m with a bit sea on and at distance. He used to fish the beach a lot and and got a lot of fish. Top bloke, same bloke fought me to cast.
Happy to help, Keen to learn!

          Thanks fellas...anyone else??

I've just got in from there now, fished my usual spot, just near the trow rocks end, with a mate, from 10.30 till 12.30.

We had 2 small whiting and a small codling, all on size 1's with half a small sandeel.

Also had a really good rattle on a 2/0 pennel further out, never seen a rattle like it, not big but fierce, but the fish wasn't on I'm calling it a bass

There's a hole right next to the Trow rocks end of the beach i have tried wading into it at low water when i have been down for water for the crabs in summer,it was very deep and very steep. Its not far out and ive always fancied a chuck at it over a big high tide with a south easterly sea running. I can imagine the sands constantly changing down there depending upon direction of the sea running.

I have fished near trow rocks on a really low tide casting out into the tide, had a 5lb cod and some nice bass to 2lb, at high tide you can get some canny sport with coalies and bass when the sea isn't too big

Would love to catch a decent cod off the beach, and I've been trying hard for a bass from there, but no success yet.
