when i was a kid if we couldn't get any proper bait (ie herring!) we'd get a bag of meat scraps from the butchers. i used to catch flounders and coalies on them, including my first ever 'big' fish, a 1 lb 6oz flounder from seaton sluice harbour using an orange cord handline and a lump of beef!

Used it for a few years it does catch / last time I was on ss pier was next to a guy and his wife and he could not belive I was using it . gave him what I had left and told him to give it a go

fished with it this morning caught 3 whiteys and 4 crabs at ratty then moved to the side along the pier bit, tried with me blacks, lug, mussel fished there till 11am plenty of pull downs but could not seem to land any.
left and gave what i had left to a couple of chaps next to me._______________________________________

any it all the same it just the blood I think that gives the sent off, as after 10 mins u need to change it.
