Don't all help at once lads over 70 views with one helpful post the reason I'm asking as I have recently lowered the breaking strain of my line and fished 40lb straight through but using 7oz leads with 30lb line isnt ideal just want to order some decent leader and practice an easy knot that's tried and tested

Ultima powerflex in 70 or 80 should be fine. I use the 70 orange for leader and 80 clear for main body and find it the strongest most reliable leader, certainly much tougher than sakuma and suffix. Its hard and wiry but thats what makes it so tough and abrasion resistant. 4oz spools also make it economical to use.
I personally wouldn't tie a leader for fishing without a bimini hitch. Once mastered its only a few seconds to do and well worth the effort.

Another really strong knot instead of the Bimini twist (this is by far the best) is the spider hitch. A lot easier to tie on cold nights but not as strong. I use Bimini (tied before I go out on my reels). If I have to retie a leader knot I use a spider hitch. But usually have at least 3 reels already tied, rather than tying on leaders.

Correct me if i am wrong, but hasnt Ultima gone out of business? It has always been my choice of Leader line and can still see some on the Bay, but only in 50m spools.
Used to pay about £9 for 4oz spool with 240m of line. These 50m spools are about £5 so work out expensive compared.

ive never been a fan of the bimini twist. it probably is the strongest knot and going for a break the knot might not go. this could mean your line goes anywhere along its length, leaving you with half a spool of line.

personally .... i have used an albright knot for years as have a lot of my mates. this knot has landed a few double figure fish and tope to 25lb with no problems.

but....... if you have to go for a break, it will usually go at the knot leaving you with a full spool of line.

Another vote for Powerflex, it's all I've used for years. Never found it "hard & wiry" though - quite the opposite, it's very soft & supple and doesn't come coiling off your reel like a Slinky when casting, as some lines do. I heard recently that Ultima were coming back on the market (they may have already) - certainly their new website is up and running, featuring the Powerlex leader…

Hope they do - it's the only line of theirs that I use and my current stock of 4oz spools is nearly gone!

With regards to knots, I use a Slim Beauty shocker knot, see here..

Tying the Slim Beauty Knot | MidCurrent

It's tied with a double length of line, which makes it perfect for use with the loop of a Bimini (or spider hitch) - if not using the Bimini then just double the line over as shown in the video. It's a great little not, very strong and with a tapered profile which goes through the rings nicely when casting. The Bimini / Slim beauty combo is all I use for fishing heavy ground, although these days I don't bother with the Bimini when fishing clean ground with 15lb line, I just use the leader knot as shown in the video.

Vote for the albright, especially if you are going braid - mono shocker.

Also another vote for powerflex ...Bob - last I looked NETS still had some of the orange 50m spools in, was a few weeks back mind, I took the opportunity and stocked up!

Once the Ultima is all gone, probably go for the sufix tritanium mono...secnd choice was the F1 stuff also Ultima

Rutherfords in Sunderland have their own shock leader, its exactly the same line as Ultima and cheaper too. Not sure if its still available.

Ultima "went out of business" not for the 1st time. They've now started under a new title. Ultima Europe or something daft. They previously over stocked shops with 50m and 4oz spool, but things apparently took longer than expected. Stocks will be being replenished in the next few weeks at our local tackle Shops. I'm down to my last 2 4oz spools, so hope this is the case. I prefer the orange 50lb as the knots you can tie whip through the tip ring lovely. Can't get away with the clear stuff. Only my opinion.
GET OUT THERE AND STICK A BAIT IN IT !!!

Spot on with the orange 50lb mate.

So your saying that Ultima is not really gone then? Music to my ears like as for mono I pretty much only use F1 + powerflex

They just sell it as powerflex now, what it always has been, think its 8quid a 4oz spool.

definately agree with you /also i tend to like berkley trilene for rigs and leaders also if you can find it i like the club line 60 and 80 lb.all lines i mention are clear which i prefer for daytime fishing.

if you not bothered about coloured rig bottoms daiwa sensor is as tough as hell wiry yes but thats what you get with a high abrasion mono.
did you know panel pins comes in diff sizes ?
