  • Drilling Near Target Rock

just back from a ride up the coast and there is a drilling rig with at least one length already well into the ground ,just up from target rock (south shields) ,now i know us Sandancers have plenty Arabs within our midst ,but it can not be oil ,as i didnt see any large american bases being built in the area LOL - is it about to fall into the sea ,much like the rock itself - or has the old tip which is about 50 - 60 yds inland leaked something sinister into the ground

Mr Milliband over to you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then again he isnt the enviroment gadgy anymore is he !!!

      Bri...
      Yep where is target rock?
I know there is some work to secure the seabed of all things in the tyne but if you tell me more I will see what I can find out.

There is a meeting of the SFC on saturday so its an ideal time to ask if it affects us

      Cheers

Dave its an area just up (heading south ) from Trow Rocks ,or about 200yds from frenchmans bay heading north towards the piers - or opposite the Bamburgh pub on the coast road ,south shields - i tried to find a link to show exactly where but cant

but i think the above are clear enough

          Thanks TC.

The rig is obviously a preplanning enquiry as the geotechnics.

          But if they strike oil...

          Cheers

I'll second that Tommy how things have changed.

Ten years ago bri could have written to sea angler who would publish his letter two months later...andthen perhaps got a reply.

Or he could have written to his mp and got a similar response about a month later.

The Tinternet has changed things and got anglers better connected to the benifit of us all.

              Cheers

Cheers TC - i reckoned you might have known - i dont get the gazette anymore ,the news is always 3 days after it happpened, nowt like when it was printed in South Shields , when it was, as it happened as such - anyway ,thanks again

are thay having any open forums before they build any structures ,and have they looked into how it will effect the outlieing areas ,flooding ,sand shifting ,because of a change in tidal flow Etc Etc

back to you TC - if its an answerable question

Short answer Bri - I don't know all the details.

I would imagine (or rather, HOPE) that the effects on shifting sands due to altered tidal flow will have been taken into consideration during the design stage of the proposed "rock barrier".

It would seem that all the interested "official bodies" have come down on the side of the proposed barrier.

As regards any "open forums" being held prior to any firm commitment to go ahead with the construction.....I dunno........but I'll see what I can find out.

As the article mentions, once an official planning application for the barrier is submitted, there's a mandatory 16 week "consultation period".......now exactly what "consultation" that involves and whether or not the public can voice their opinions / see the proposals, I dunno.......but again - I'll see what I can find out. I would hope that something which is gonna effect not only the look, but possibly alter the eco-system of that stretch of coastline, would be open to PUBLIC consultation.

Seem to remember a while back a story, this area was found to have been a industrial waste dump site from years a go, had some very nasty illegal chemical hazardous deposits left behind. The Rig is there probably to get core samples.I may be wrong though.

There's what looks like some test drilling going on along at Soutar and the Wherry area over the last few weeks as well.
A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work.

Been off line for a few weeks so have just read this thread. Like some others have said they were looking at coastal erosion. Trow quarry was landfilled years ago with dodgy stuff like asbestos, the numpties obviously didnt realise that it would eventually get washed out, as it did a few years ago. The last i heard was that they were going to build a sea defence wall along there, looks like we might lose a few good shots a long there Bri.
