  • The Observer's Book of Sea Fishing - circa 1982

Dug out one of my old fishing books last night - this one was clearly the oldest as I'd only have been 3 when it was originally printed and 5 when this re-print came out.

While old, a lot of the skills/techniques it writes about are still employed today...in fact a lot of the questions I have asked on this forum could have been answered by merely looking at this pocket sized bible (no mention of crabsticks though strangely)

    Hard Backed Crabs

Superb as bait for big Wrasse. After hooking, crush slightly so that body juices create a scent trail

Simple eh? Only Henry Gilbey didn't mention that in his article in Sea Angler did he?

A question I haven't asked before is this - has anyone ever used blennies/butterfish etc as bait with any results?

    Here's the books verdict:

    Rock Pool Fish

Gobies, Blennies, butterfish etc make first class bait

I know how to catch them - size 6 hook with small chunk of limpet in one of the millions of rock pools along the coast...

I'm going to give the crab a go when I'm in Wales - but what about the blennie bait? anyone ever used it?

While I'm on about stuff as well - has anyone ever seen a lure like this before? I got it from Johns Tackle when I asked for a wedge lure....I was a bit dubious at first but on first cast with it I caught a macky so it can't be too bad can it? bought myself another 2 since......
