  • Cod.

Popped in to Morrisons at Consett today to buy some cod from the fishmongers. ( sick of the slivers i get in local chippy).
Never realised what is actually wasted on a cod.
The one fillet i bought wieghed 1lb. (3/4 for me and 1/4 for the missus). The fish monger who is a great bloke who always gives advice was telling me the average size of a fish used in the shop is 4lb. a fillet either side is 2lb of the fish and the rest is discarded (head etc).
So basically any cod we catch we only use half.

We got talking about the biggest fish he had filleted and he said it was a ling. Its head wieghed 14lb.

    Mick.
Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

nowt goes to waste in this house. the heads/bones get made into fish stock, reduced then frozen. Then used for bouillabase, fish soup with bits of trimmed white flesh drop in at the end, paellas, fish pies

if were away with the boat, the heads/carcasses go for pot bait for crabs lobsters, or in the shrimp traps

    Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs

Converting an MFV Fifie trawler type thing.
