  • A lesson in Mackerel - Blyth Pier 09/07/07

Went to the pier tonight with two of my mates who've never fished before, so i was under pressure to "keep them amused" and show them what fishing is all about....at least what spinning is about anyway.

Lesson 1 - Casting: Went OK, I thought Simon (aka Snipes) was gonna use the rod as a javelin and my heart was in my throat every time he went for it. Dave seemed to pick it up quite quickly.

Lesson 2 - The retrieve: again Dave learnt pretty quickly that fishing the lure mid water is better than skipping across the surface. Snipes was either too slow or too quick

At this point in the game it seems Dave is the star pupil - then Snipes strikes into a fish and my 6ft Shakespeare rod bends over double...he sh*ts himself coz he's not sure what to do so i talk him through it - and he lands his first ever Coalie - only a small 'un but the smile on Snipes face was great.

It's quiet for what seems ages when Snipes catches another Coalie - me and Dave have not had a sniff at this point

Then the witching hour rolls in - the tide is high and the sun is setting - I hook in to my first macky then five mins later so does Dave....Dave's made up - his first fish and it's a "keeper". He's beaming from ear to ear!!!

So now we've all caught fish and I'm chuffed to bits - the pressure is off and everyone is happy.

We stayed on the pier until 2230 then thought we'd better head home to the wives..

    Total Tally:

    Snipes: 1 Mackerel 4 Coalies
    Wallsendo: 2 Mackerel 3 Coalies
    Dave: 1 Mackerel 4 Coalies

There were lads right at the end of the pier catching loads - but I was more than happy with our modest bag of 15 fish (Coalies all lobbed back) and having given my mates a treat in catching fish!!

My mates are now converts and want to go fishing again...well they can buy their own f****g gear next time!!

Pleased to hear you had a good night Tony, Mackerel fishing can be a real buzz, especially when it is your first time.

Catching a bag of mackeral last year got me back to the fishing game. It was late August and there was only a couple of us on the Heugh. Totally unexpected to fish for them after 30 year plus break. Young lad gave me some old pink feathers on a three hook set up.
mother in law loved the fish as well.

              Mick.

Went back last night - my mate it seems is a definite convert to this fishing lark....I wasn't fussed but he practically begged me to go - how could I refuse?

We caught three macky and several coalies - if we'd landed everything we'd hooked the tally would have been higher...

All fish caught were really close in...the best time was just as it was going dark, which last night was about 2215 - the pier was more or less empty at that point.

That's me done with spinning for macky for now - I don't want it's lustre to tarnish...so I'll go back and do some flatty bashing next week (I'll take me mate and show him how that's done )

As an extra - i tested this rod/reel out last night and it is definitiely more of a first timers rod...to steal one of Jims phrases it was a bit "like a stick of licorice"...it casts OK and it handled a fish OK but compared to my better Daiwa model there really was no comparison. I couldn't fault the reel - rear drag and quite a deep spool of 10lb line...nice smooth cast too.

Verdict: Good budget rod/combo for a beginner

Anyone wanting to spin and wants a decent rod - pay a little more and go for one of the better brands
