  • advice on fishing the Tyne.

Never really fished the Tyne much in the past and when I have I have had little success.
Just hoping that sum of you lads could advise me on somewhere to go to fishing on the north bank over high water thruw the day with th chance of a cod or some sport,
Any advice would be greatly appreciated ,thanks.

I'm not much of a River Rat I'm afraid, but there are a few places up Walker Riverside / Pottery Bank that can give some sport. I've had nothing special from up there myself, but as I said I don't fish it a lot. Further up you've the likes of St Peter's Basin, but I've never fished there either.

Downstream, many of the old marks are now inaccessible, others you've got to do a bit of fence climbing (like the old Rubber Factory & Smith's dock). The only place I tend to fish is the Fish Quay / Ice House area, but a lot of people are put off here as it's very snaggy unless you can put a bait out well past 120 yards or so. Sport here can be very good or sometimes equally frustrating if fish are just undersize - whatever, you just have to get things up off the bottom and reel like the clappers to avoid all the snags on the way in. Codlings, Coleys & Whitings are probably the bulk of what's available, although some days I've hit on with the dabs as well. Cold winter's mornings have always been the conditions that I associate with this place & while it fishes over high tide I've always preferred the end of the ebb and the first 2 or 3 hours of the flood. Least productive I've found is just after HW and the first of the ebb, but I have had some good sessions fishing from bottom all the way up to the top of the tide. Best avoid the big tides as you'll just get ripped up or downstream - tides I like best are around a 1-1.2m ebb or so…too small and there just doesn't seem enough tide.

I'm sure some of the River Rats can offer more advice on the other marks.

There no fence climbing at smiths docks as there's gaps in the fences , lee.

Cheers for the tips lads and with it being decent sized tide I think il hold on until next week sumtime, probably hit one of the local rock marks to see if I can winkle a couple out of the ruff stuff.
May Evan try st Mary's, done well there in the past this time of year off the back of the island.

Smiths Dock is ok on the flood with smaller tides, access via hole in fence but the mud is pretty horrible. But it always seems like a waste of good bait to me with all the small fish you have to wade through to get a size codling (if you are lucky). But I know some lads have had good catches on certain tides.

seen more than one report recently of codling around 2lb from newcastle quayside, around the copthorne and the court.

I usually fish jarrow park or market docks, i've had plenty of codling but they've all been the size of toonboys 5lber

Iv'e fished the river since the early 80's and found the best time to fish is during the day on small to medium tides early morning being best especially walker area, you can be getting a fish a cast but as soon as it gets dark they seem to go off. the best place i find for fishing during darkness is the haven and the middens island on medium to big tides

As has been said i`ve also fished the river for a long time and found that 2 tides are never the same.Night time.... daytime averaging it out had good sport equally. Was always convinced daytime was better as seemed to have more fish in daylight but recently have had good bags in darkness too.Fished monday night for 2hrs with the bairn upriver had 8 fish made up of two flatties and the rest codling, biggest over 3lb to the bairn my best 2lb 6.Wished i could`ve stayed would`ve hammered them.
