what is slightly comforting though, is that whilst this rears its ugly head every year, the number of people condemning it is far greater this year than it has been in previous years which must be a good sign

It's strange isn't it? While the rest of us lament the over excessive nature of pulling in "tonnes of macky" there's been little feedback from the lads that are doing it.

Do they feel chastened by the general lack of support from their peers? (saying that - intelligent people aren't in their peer group clearly) Have they seen the errors of their ways? Can they actually justify why they are doing it in an intelligent argument?

Probably not - they are "problies gan doon the peeyah the neet to scope oot wot the chinky fellas are pullin in coz it's pure cush" (with a can of fosters in their back pocket?)

Am I being harsh? Am I casting a stereotyped image of these plums?

              In the news today....

When questioned about the unneccessary killing of 100s of fish the young mans answer was quite abrupt.......

its sad here of so many macky being taken 60/80/100+ etc, take what you really need for bait ,supper etc ,these fish keep the sprat in check, which are a mayor pest during the winter months, the long term effects...........

Just been reading this thread like many more before it on the same topic.
I do not condone the mass slaughter of mackies every summer in the name of "fun" !!

But one thing I would like to point out, is that I was on sheilds pier last sunday afternoon and the mackies went crackers.
The usual crew were there, catching far too many and getting happily drunk To$$AS!!
I was fishing half way up the pier for flatties and had no mackerel for bait as it was my intention to catch a couple and use them.
I had a wander up with my 13ft rod and a set of feathers and set out to catch a couple.

Within 10 mins I had 11 fish....................I stopped at that point and made my way back down the pier to carry on fishing for flatties.

I used one fish for bait that day, I have frozen four down for future bait and the other six were to eat. Four of which I have already scoffed.

My point is, that during this thread I have read it mentioned that the use of feathers is barbaric etc..........and fishing for mackies is far more fun with light spinning gear. I most certainly do not disagree with this, but do disagree that fishing with feathers is wrong.
My main quarry that day was flatties and I didn't want to spend it fishing with one lure/float for mackies.
I knew how many fish I wanted and stopped when I had them.
So not all of us that use feathers are moronic tw*ts with no sense.

                          Cheers

                          Tony

your only competing against yourself when fishing for mackerel, needless slaughter no other way to describe it.not big and not clever !!!

                            I hope you're happy now

us ANGLERS fish all the long winter months and catch maybe to be modest 80-150 fish ,whiting, flatties, codling etc for plate ,the summer arrives and we can catch enough macky to fill the freezer in one trip down to the local pier, ive, seen amatuer summer anglers who buy cheap spinning gear from local tackle shops, fish for macky with feathers ,bag up over 100 +fish[ probably end up in the wheely bin more like] they say they,re for the cat [fat cat]and boast about down there local boozer how good an ANGLER [not]they are to there mates,.i,m disgusted that they should be allowed to do this....
