If it was a big mackerel bait the chances are a ling would pick it up but yes all along our coast you can catch cod from the rough ground and sand banks close in.

Just to name a few well known marks....St M. Light house, Souter, Hendon tanks and also the sand banks about 1mile out from the Tyne mouth.

Had fish from all the above listed marks, just not of any great size.

Phillitofish, plenty of good chucks around shields, black path, johnsons, a lad had a 4lb cod from the last one just last week, best thing to do is take a walk from trow up to whitburn at low water and take a pen and paper for notes! Couple of pubs along the way to refresh with!

        Summer cod fishing

People don't try much for codling in the summer but you can catch them most of the fish are just a mile off the shore loads just of the tanks at hendon. But you could try and i have seen them caught there johnsons for the red kelp codling using big balls of fresh crab, use a pennel rig incorparating a rotten bottom system, I heard a few got caught there last summer the only problem is you get plauged by wrasse at times sometimes you just get a big bang bite at times they are hard to hook. But i would say obviously with the summer in full swing just use Fresh peeler at this mark, as this is what cod will be searching for at this mark. You get loads in the rivers on the night tides these are fresh run codling not red codling but they are only small 40cm things. For the better ones youre best of at the rough ground marks, johnsons or whitburn steel on the night tides, i have heard a few bass have been caught of the steel recently as well. Hope this information helps mate.
