I stopped using pulley rigs after last winter and just switched to a simple 1 hook rig made made using a 3 way swivel - found my catch rate has improved a lot this year so far. I always hold my rod as well so i can feel whats going on all the time.

I also have given up using pulley rigs.. Lost quite a few fish with them, just use a simple paternoster rig with a rotten bottom.. Works really well, cheap and quick to tie..

What ground are yous all talking about because for beach work I fish pulleys all the time and don't seem to be any worse off than any other rig. Rough ground simple me hook flapper does the trick with a rotten bottom. Big pull downs don't mean fish are hooked a fish can pick the bait up form the side and drop it after a pull resulting in no hook up , just got to wait for next take

I was talking about rough ground, although not sure what other lads were fishing into.. Although fishing clean beaches i do use flapper rigs etc. etc.

I mainly use pulley rigs in different styles in all types of ground but for the rough stuff I have found a simple one hook flapper is best in heavy ground/kelp

One thing I have noticed with CART is you sometimes get a massive bites from nowhere because even a little whiting can catch its teeth in the mesh (whatever you are using) and panic. Apologies if this has already been mentioned.

lately i found that clipped down paternosters fare better for me than a pulley . why i dont know .
Punch and pull then let rip

Velvet swimmer crabs give really good bites ! managed to hook one on Saturday about 3" across the back of the shell. BTW they can be a real pest as well float fishing somewhere like Cullernose point.
