Alright lads, im planning on getting a new reel and was wanting peoples opinions. Just wondered what peoples thoughts were on these? I was going to get a 525 but ive heard loads of people say the newer ones aren't the best as they are made in China? Anyways I wanted to know what the Fathom is like as was going to get one, itll be the 15 I get and was going to get brand new. Thanks in advance.

thanks for putting this on m8 was thinking of a 525 off Santa but if the fathom's better then...
Well I heard the new 525s are made in China and are apparently crap so thought I'd check these out mate
cheers m8, I havnt heard that much about them mate, I was lookin for new reels back in march and the lad in the tackle shop(frasers) said everyone seemed to be going for the fathom over the 525
Unfortunately most times when reel bust its user error or lack of maintenance the odd time is manufacturing faults. Just make sure you don't damage the reel wash it under fresh cold water after every session and service when needed. If you use 15lb or less on the penn 525mag2 the line can sometimes get caught between the spool and cage. Only flaw with the fathom is the brake blocks are held in place by a plastic flange and under hard casting they can unclip so you end up with more brake blocks out than what you intended. Just my experiences I've still got the reel they are great to use.

I got a penn fathom 15 a few weeks ago.. it looked good quailty but i sent it back. I thought it was small for 30lb line which i use so i got an avet sx insted. They look and reel good though
I got one and thought it 'held back' a bit when casting to start with. It seems to have loosened up a bit now after a few sessions. The best thing about the reel is the retrieve! I can reel in a fish in a strong tide run in the Tyne using thumb and forefinger no problem! Very smooth with the floating spindle!!
I still fancy trying an old 525 though!
