  • Loch Ryan

    Hi Guy's ,

I'm new to this site, be about the Irish sites for years. Coming over to fish the 2 day comp on Loch Ryan in a couple of weeks and was wondering anybody want to share any info on baits and rigs, distance and Ground type. Is it fishing well at the moment?

Don't want to have to bring over a hernia pole if a bass rod in all thats needed.

    Thanks,

    Scara.

Take your hernia pole mate. Most fish are taken at long range. The ground you'll be fishing from will be good (ish) at Lefnoll to terrible (near the lighthouse). Old house point at the northern end is mixed - this is normally where its won. Lefnoll is bloody hard work to be honest.

For bait, sandeel is tops for the dogfish, with ragworm working as well. An outside chance of a thorny from Old house point, or conger (lighthouse section)

Pray for no wind though. I fished it a couple of years ago with a strong northerly wind blowing down the loch - the kelp fronds we were pulling out were massive

It used to be a good match with quite a few fish, but its been getting worse in my opinion fish wise - its a long way to go to blank, especially when you consider the marks that are around that region which you could have fished.

    Good luck anyway.

P.S. Try a couple of the opens in Kirkcudbright. They're holding a 2 day match (flatties in the river on the saturday, dogs and stuff on the rock ends on the sunday) in the first week in July. Its a great weekend.

Scara, I fished a comp' there last Oct. The zone beside the lighthouse produced mainly doggies with sandeel fished at range. I managed to catch on black lug, sandeel (a wrap of mackeral flesh bound on sometimes) and rag. Hope this helps.
A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work.

OH, forgot to mention my mate who lost a conger close in when a dickhead next to him refused to give him a hand to land it.

Thanks for the replys lads. Good info to have coming over.
Looking forward to it. It's nice to go and fish a few days some where diffrent if nothing else for the banter. Also to rob Idea's off you crafty buggers.

I'll post some reports over the next couple of months to give you an idea of the fishing , tackle , baits and results we're seeing.

            Thanks Again,
            Scara
