Canny sized weaver like - biggest I have seenBest shore catch 2016 - 7.5lb cod, Seaton Carew!

It's definitely a weever, I remember us catching a few when I used to fish the beaches with my Dad and Brothers.
I've not seen any since about 1979/80 ish more or less when I stopped fishing.
How long was it?
I thought they were supposed to be no more than about 4 inches long, at least if it is a lesser weever anyway

Ah it does look a bit bigger in the picture, must have been a small hook as well I guess?
You need to watch the gill spines as well as the black fin.
I'm sure I saw a sign on Coldingham beach warning of the danger of stepping on them, last summer.
Might have been another beach mind you.

you get quite a few on Tynemouth pier,lads mistake them for small whiting can be nasty if your allergic to them. davy.PB

Can be very nasty, my father got stung many years ago, fishing off the east pier @ Scarborough his hand was twice the size by the time we got him to hospital. simple treatment though. There are several people stung in the south bay every year, little buggers bury themselves in the sand with just their head and dorsal fins,(spikes), showing. Sometimes very close to the beach where kids paddle !
