Seaham Open 20-Oct-2013
Not normally one for fishing major competitions I decided to join 5 of the lads & fish the Seaham Open. Though it wasn’t the best result for the 6 of us it did have a fantastic ending.
We decided to split up with Graham, Scott & his dad fishing the south end of the Hendon prom, Steve fishing the Hall beach & Col & me fishing Ryhope pipe.
It was a lovely warm day & still enough surf running to at least suggest a few fish.
This wasn’t to be the case. All I managed was a horrible eel, Col blanked & the rest of the lads had undersize fish or fish that just made size.
We did see Lee Burton come past us with his 5lb codling that he caught at the Manholes. This ended up giving him 2nd spot.
The best news was that having seen the results later on that night, it turned out that a friend of mine who sometimes comes on this site had won the comp. It was Derek Russell (Der1974R) that took top spot with a codling just over 8 1/2lb. Derek had drawn peg no. 1 on Seaham North pier & only entered the comp in memory of his late dad. He fished all day catching mainly undersize fish, a lobster & one just size codling. On his very last cast he decided to cast one into the channel in the hope of a flatty or whiting & having just packed his drop net away he seen his rod give a small bite & then a good pull down. Having realised it was a decent fish the lad on peg 3 got his drop net back out & Derek managed to land the winning fish.
Dereks young son Joe showing off his dads prized catch, a cracking cod just over 8 ½ lb.
I am sure that the fish will have made a great supper for all his family especially when you think that Derek & his wife have 7 children to feed.
It was fantastic news that not only had Derek won the open but also walked away with £1300 that will be well spent by his family.
Very well done Derek mate, it couldn’t have went to a more deserving lad.
