thier are lots of methods for easing tight spigots a lot have already been mentioned wet and dry will do know harm as long as you use the high grades like 1200,1600,and 2000 my hands are probs more rougher lol the w&d must be wrapped round the spigot so you avoid causing flat spots sometimes inside the female section you get a build up of carbon dust which stops the spigot from going in but the ptfe is the buisness, carbon itself it a really strong material but it has very poor wear resistance when 2 areas are pushed in and out over the life time of the rod .as many of you know certain rods some spigots likes of anyfish anywhere have poor spigots in some cases i know some have only lasted 6/8 months and they have been almost shoulder to shoulder and some of the best spigots which i,ve seen to lasted have been greys.thier is also a liquid what pole anglers use called spigot saver which goes on like water and sought of forms a barrier between the 2 surfaces and eliminates the wear good stuff hope you get soughted

I do clean them after every trip, you're right sand will stick to it so they do need to be wiped down.

Bigfoot.
Do not use any type of sand paper, try putting a small amount of grease/vaseline inside the female part and you will find the tip will not stick.
If you use the wet and dry/sand paper and you take off to much then the blank manufacturer will know immediately then you will have no claim for them to put it right.
The problem with Carbon is it dries out when not in use.
If you cannot get it done give me a call, 0191 4226298
