Casting.
I had a nightmare at the beginning of the season with my abu garcia 7000. This was on the bottom of my Abu Garcia 12 foot beachcaster. Every other cast a birds nest. Lost quite a lot of line and spool now about three quarters full. No probs since. Cast miles with the wind behind me but not as far as a mag.
Think the probs were overloaded reel.Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

breaks
Hi Daren I have never used a 525 but I do use a Abu 6500 Mga Elite, and I had the same problem when I first used it, it came with what I thought was a spare brake block as it turned out this was not the case it was the only break block ( which I only found out when I took the reel apart ), and may I suggest you do not cast it out until you can set the rod up ready to cast then drop the wieght on to the deck without using your thumb to control it, if you have it set up right there should be no over runs.Sonik SK4

I have the same rod and reels and dont have too many problems. I think its primarily your casting style. I would however check the mags are still there and working corectly. Next i would put thick oil in the spool bearings.
If the reel runs for much more than about 10-12 secs with the mags on then its far too fast.
Ps the rods much more powerful than most realise and deffo work better with 6oz
Mags are renowned for being too fast and definitely need thick oil for fishing.
If you need a hand send me a pm.

When casting leave your thumb slightly on the spool, this way you can stop the spool turning too fast and feel if its going to overrun. I used to have a 525, i hated every minute with it. I now have a slosh3 and have no problems casting over 150yds with it.

I used to get a lot of grief in my early days of using a multiplier - i was using a 3oz weight and 20lb line so the weight was a bit on the light side and the line a bit over heavy for the reel.... You have to balance things out, shock leader and a 4-8oz sinker (depending on rod/reel and fishing style), knock it up an ounce at a time on the sinker and choose line that's right for your location and distance until you find a nice mix - lighter line spools off a lot cleaner for distance but you lose out on strength if your in a rough area. I like 15-18lb main line and a 4-5oz sinker for a reasonably mix of beach and pier fishing in this area.

Hi, Try this link which takes you to Neil Mackellow's web site. I follow the real tuning guide and find it works, the only difference being I use heavy gearbox oil for the bearings for fishing as it still allows the spool to spin freely when the brakes are totally of and cuts it down to 4/5 seconds when full on. Golden rule is do not overfill the spool as well.
A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work.
