  • when do the cod go out to spawn?

ok..i caught a 12lb 12 cod 18th of march last year.[full of roe}..i was just wondering when do the females go out to deeper water to spawn?..does it depend on the sea state? i.e big seas they stay in shore longer?

Historically I would have said that you can get cod roe in fish from January onwards and they would be gone, by and large, by the end of February. Traditionally that period was when there were fewer fish but of a better stamp. By now there would be very few anglers bothering, as the last few weeks seem to show.

generally spawning takes place between Feb and April in depths of around 200m, in the north sea this can be as little as 20m to 100m.

I caught a 5.5lb cod full of roe on the 18th of May the year before last. I didnt expect to catch anything much but went fishing anyway on Skinningrove jetty. I think they must spawn over quite a long period with most fish Spawning Feb and March, but some spawning earlier and some later?
