  • Sand eels as bait

Do they make a decent bait for shore fishing? Been given around half a dozen frozen and was wondering whether they're any good and if I should use them on their own or as part of a mix

I know a freind who freezes up to 6-700 each year using it right through the season and always scores some quality fish with them every year

I remember one night having a nightmare of a session - not a touch in four hours plus.

I decided to pack it in and go home, but when I wound in after the last cast there was a sandeel foul-hooked on the end.

I decided to take this as a sign from the god of fishing and put it on the hook and had another go. Within 10 minutes I had a knock, but missed it. The bait was still OK, but showed teeth marks, so I wrapped some more thread on and knocked it out again.

5 minutes later a 3lb codling decided it liked the look of the sandeel and the blank was saved.
