  • Abu 464.

Spotted some old Abu rods on e-bay. The old glass fibre type. There is a 464 and a 484 Atlantic. There was even a Thomas Hardie.(did not get reserve price)
By god these bring back some memories. They were like the £260 ZZiplex of today.
I used to have the 464 with the metal spiggot and i thought i was the bees knees. I had an Abu 8000 on the base of rod for maximum casting. I put a bid in for the 464 £7.50 (£12 for delivery) and have been outbid by 50p.
EIGHT SQUIDS for an abu rod.
Mine cost over £50 thirty years ago.
I might bid again and hang it on the wall. (or use it as a spare).

PS i,ll be down the pool next Tues if this wind drops.

    Coincidence or what!!

I have just read your post Mick and had a little chuckle to myself , I remember the Atlantic 484 Zoom very well. In fact Mick, I have one in touching distance as I type this reply. I still have the Abu 9000 and the 10000 reels that I used to use with the rod.

As you say Mick. In their day they were the bee's knee's.

      464

You know what it went for somthing like £12-£15. I was telling the lads on the pier yesterday and they all turned there noses up. Carbon fibres the best i was informed.Well i,ve got a second hand carbon fibre abu beachcaster and its ok but i would still have a fibre glass one.

these new cf rods might cast a few yards more but whats the use if half the baits missing and what gets in the water is mashed down the hook ??, out of the two my preff was the 464 as you could site your reel where it suited you, not you adust to suit the rod, dont forget the 474 that wee beastie had a nice flock grip, just right for those cold nights on the beach lol, i still have my 463, ideal rod for light fishing though its handled a few double figure carp and pike as well

We should set-up an antique fishing rod competition

Probably antique fishermen will be using them as well
