Lots of the catch reports are mentioning that this run of codling are full of sandeels. Would switching to sandeels, or other oily fish baits not work well? It seems strange that lug and crab are still the best choice?

Worth a try, When ive been digging there have been hundreds of big sandeels jumping out. Kept quite a few for next summer, however they may get used now for a bit experiment.

I got to the Hall beach today about half 3 and there was a bloke on the wall fishing frozen sandeel. He caught a coley while I was there and had 5 small codling earlier in the day he told me. He was using chunks of big sandeel he had caught himself earlier in the year.

Bluey is underestimated. The scent it gives off is unreal (drop a bit in the water and watch the slick that comes off it). I had a cod from arbroath on it last year weighing 11lb2. They swear by it up there.
Thanks for the replies, lads. I'll be interested to hear how you get on Mick...
Interesting to hear that bluey works, an' all
Cheers
so I had bought a pack of frozen sandeels I cut it in half and took 4 with me to give them a shot, didn't get a sniff lads, the only thing that was getting any interest was lugs and blacks, iwas talkin to one lad who said he had been out same place the night before and that he had 3 out 2-3 lb'ers but that they just seemed to be going for pure lug and nowt else so the sandeels didn't work last night, not for me anyway, but it was worth a shot ill give them a go again at some point and might get a different result eh?
