winter at st abbs

hey guys been loving getting back into fishing thru the summer and abbs n eyemouth r the bollox. i know its a dangerous place to b in bad conditions but how well dose it actually fish in the winter for the die hards?? lots of cod?? can u still get pollock??

Personally Davy - I think it's worse than that regarding safety. If it's cold, clear and frosty it's slippy, if it's clear and a dew it's slippy, if it's wet it's slippy. There are rocks that are better for crossing but they're not in the Golf Course or St Abbs Head areas - potentially two of the best winter shots. I'm not one for being wimpish but it's definitely high risk wherever you end up.

Its tricky enough in the summer so winter time when the weather is bad and the rocks are covered in ice it would be leathal and you and your mates safety is worth more than any fish

to be fair like u guys say its pretty dangerous anywhere u go rock wise in the winter. but theres got to be a few places ur not going to have to risk ur life to fish. and yes im more interested in how it fishes not the safty warning, as i could fish the harbor if i wished

No reason why you couldn't fish the harbour I suppose but as already said most of the place is very dangerous in winter conditions.

Am staying at Eyemouth caravan park in a few weeks (sun 9.50 holidays). Will be taking a rod or two, will prob fish one or two days and one night while there. Will prob fish one of the piers or find a beach at night, as won't be venturing onto the rocks at all alone at night in any seas/rain. Just isn't worth it.

nobody trying to turn thread into something its not.only concerned about your safty in the winter,its not like the rocks and skeers up and down the nor,th east they are massive high cliffs ,have seen lads slip with early morning dew in the summer if you insist on fishing there in the winter then I suggest you fish the left hand side the divers ramp,or the harbouir or rocks round the harbour,this is the reason that not many lads fish it in the winter and no reports.have fished st abbs for over 40yrs and done articles for sea angler,so I and the rest of the lads that have offered you advice.know what they are talking about. please if you do fish it in winter take the upmost care. davy.

Being a couple of 50 somethings, the only rock mark we have fished is directly behind the caravan site. A pretty easy wee scramble up and down to a big flat rock to fish from into deepish water and cleanish ground. Had mackerel and cod in October from there with the aforementioned Sun Holiday deal! Weather was lovely though and would not try it if icy or wet.

the end of the pier fishes well for cod,coalys,wrasse, and some cracking Pollock,the diver ramp just before you get to the lighthouse is safe to fish left or right and no cliffs to climb down,would think this would throw some cracking cod out in the winter months but I have never tried it as I only fish there in the summer. davy.

thanks again lads, if i try in the winter it will be well thought out before risking it and in no way any bad conditions such as frost or rain, and more than likely to the easy access areas. just love the area up there and a very keen angler.
