cod, coalfish, pollock are the main three all quite meaty texture but very different flavours
      cod I find rather bland
pollock caught from rock edges tend to have an iodine taste after feeding and living in weed beds
coalfish a bit stronger taste than cod but i quite like it
whiting, not so meaty as cod but has a sweeter taste
mackerel, the best tasting of the lot and very meaty
then you have the wrasse, lots of flesh on it but just don't like the taste

Just to add to this, Plaice and Dab are both very tasty, a good size Dab makes for a lovely meal. Flounder from the rivers aren't up to much, but a Flounder from an open beach can taste OK

Can't beat Pollock for me, great when fresh. Also like Coleys and Whiting in fishcakes.

I love whiting and Dabs either in fish cakes or fillets, (if big enough).
The only fish I do not eat are Flounders, Wrasse, Bass and Coalfish, (I have taken one or two Coalies to add to fish cakes as they have a very strong flavour).
I stopped fishing for Bass years ago as I could not find a recipe or a way to cook the fish that I liked. I used to return all the Bass I caught because of this!
Basically, just try whatever you catch as everyone has different tastes in the fish they enjoy. I have heard the theory about Flounders tasting OK from clean beaches , but it's the [I]OK[I] bit that worries me!! As Crocodile Dundee said ''You can live on it but it tastes like ****''.

Bass is way overrated. Years ago it would be used for pot bait until fancy restaurants started to call it Sea Bass and attached a fancy price tag to match.

Black Bream on the other hand, now they do make superb eating

don't want to upset anyone but that is what happened to the common sole, caught by fishermen off Dover, they started calling it Dover Sole and charged twice the price as if it was different from other common sole.

                            Same with catfish.

It's a while ago now, but I can remember when it was on the fishmongers' slabs, labelled 'Catfish' and selling at 70p a pound. I think cod was about 2 quid or 2.50 at the time. Cat was dirt cheap.

Then somebody had the bright idea of re-labelling it as 'Rock Turbot' and the price went up to about £1.60 overnight. That was about 20 years ago. God knows what they charge these days.

EDIT. Just done a google and a crowd called Fish in a Box are selling rock turbot at 18 quid a kilo.
