  • is this a mk1 apollo?

just picked up a pretty much unused greys apollo, immaculate!
i only bought it because of all the positive things i have read about these rods on this site and others (and it was very very cheap)
the rod was advertised as 13 foot but when i got it home and measured it, its spot on 14"1'
Must say i am very impressed with how light and slim the blank is, i have the new greys apollo match (the slimmest one in the new range) and this old rod is lighter and about the same width in the tip! much much stiffer though
The blank has a blueish tint throughout and the fuji eyes are whipped in black finished in metallic red and underwhipped in turquoise and it has a blue shrink tube
the greys apollo logo is on the butt section near the spigot end and as in bright red
someone told me the mk1s where individually numbered above the shrink tube but this one definitely is not
Any ideas? whatever mk it is, it looks a really capable rod

Its all marked as a greys apollo mate and it really does not look like its ever been interfered with
Might be able to maybe lose a half inch with butt cap and could maybe squeeze the spigot down another half
Just had a good google and there was a 14 foot apollo mk 1, the only one with a eye on the butt section apparently

I own the mk2 and cant fault it , the numbers were something tony Anderson would use in the early days of greys , to mate the butt with the tip on the production line. I also own the shadow , which is another cracker from greys .

ok cheers well thats the question answered
thought that may have been a picture of your mk 2 you discussed, so wasnt 100%certain
the guy i bought it from said he bought it about 4 years ago brand new from a place in Whitley bay, might of been old stock or time passes faster than we remember
came with a old abu ambassador IGFA 12! what a beast of a reel, seems quite smooth, going to give it a shot next time out

                              Yes mate thats the one
I was supposed to be going for it sunday afternoon but got a text off the guy saying there was a mix up and someone else was now buying it
So i just said fair doos no problem
Got a text monday saying you can have them if you want them still, so went through and he said just give me £60 for the pair and sorry for the mix up!
The reel is a right old beast, never heard of a abu 12, they are the same as the 9000 apperantly and are big game reels, the Rod is clean as a whistle doesnt look like its ever been used
