I started with a "Gilfin" 12ft beachcaster and a Daiwa 7700 fixed spool reel, when I was about 12 I think.
I made my own seat box from scrap plywood and a bit of old seat belt, I've still got the box, as well as some of the old bits and pieces.
This was in the early to mid 70's and I used to either fish with my dad and his mate or my older brothers.

Incredibly heavy glass (i think) rod and a gigantic wooden Scarborough reel must of been 30 years old at least when i got my hands on it
My dad tried to show me how to throw it overhead and backwards (facing away from the sea)!i dont think he was that thouroughly convinced and i wasnt either

a sad start
it all started for me when my cousin fell off sunderland pier while fishing, he could not get his waders off and they pulled him under and drown him. his mother gave his new rod to me an Abu Atlantic 484 zoom. i then got my first multi. a mitchel 602 ap. still have both in the garage.

begs the question why someone would feel the need for waders on a pier? how did he fall? washed off?
Always puts the fear of god into me when i see people wearing unpredictable gear that would most certainly drown them should the worst happen
