  • Making Tides

Have been watching the catch reports, or should i say lack of catch reports.

i know there has been some debate about both high and low pressure and how they affect the catches.

i must say i have not really took much notice as to wether my catches have been better or worse due to pressures.

One thing i do know is i always seem to catch more fish on making tides, last weel we had some of the best fishing weather and very few fish. look at the tides they were dropping in size and from today they start making.

If my theory is correct and sea's dont drop off to quickly then hopefully we should start seeing one or two fish showing, but dont forget we are also well into February and if previous years are anything to go by the codling begin to get pretty scarce anyway.

    So its fingers crossed!
If people think you are an idiot, why speak and remove all doubt !

I hope your right mate and it's not something more sinister.

We're off soon to have a look at the sea and decide on a mark to fish tonight cos you never know!!
    Regards, Graham

Hi Terry, It's not theory you will always have a better chance of catching fish on 'making' tides, regardless of atmospheric pressure, but lows are better. I have had a lot of my best fishing right in the middle between neaps and springs, which is always midweek when i cant make it. i'm going tomorrow 3am so hopefully will report back .

Joe and myself went to s/s pier at 3.45 this morning.started at the 43 mark half tide down, had one cast each, and Joe brought one in 2.5lb. then we went to the s/e corner and he did the same first cast. then we had a couple more codling which we lowered down on gripwires, about 1.5lb then the sun came up and we packed in. I thought we would have had a bit more sport with the dying sea, but still just great to be out there fishing. not a good report but tried. night night.

Not too sure about the "making tides" theory unless you can point to a mark you can fish throughout a lunar cycle and then say it fishes best on the make. Most of our beach marks are so flat that a smaller tide at least means there's some water in them and on a bigger tide they dry out. Similarly some of our rock marks are only fishable on "making tides" as otherwise you can't get on them. That avoids you allowing a test on the mark.
Must agree with the February theory - the old man used to say February was a time when you stood about more than usual, were colder than usual but had the best chance of a good fish. Would have been right this week at least.
