  • Hi Pressure = no fish / Low Pressure = loadsa fish

I'm a great believer that hi pressure puts fish off (apart from whiting on calm frosty nights!). I've got logs and logs of fishing sessions going back years, times, places, conditions etc, etc...and all the sessions that fell over a high pressure, weren't that productive! Even when the conditions seemed perfect.
Sessions that were done during a low pressure always produced fish - some sessions were really good (looking back at some of them brought back some great memories)....basically, the sea conditions could be spot on, but the fish aint feeding!
I know this year hasn't been that particularly good, to use as a bench mark anyway, but it would be interesting to hear other anglers views on this.
I could be totally off the mark, but as my own personal fishing records prove, high pressures proved fruitless....food for thought...

Could be something in it Paul. I don't read that much into it to be honest, as northerly airflows in the north sea are normally as a result of a high pressure system (the airflow being clockwise), and I've (and I'm sure you have) have caught plenty of fish during northerly winds.

I know they hate easterly winds down south as they believe it kills fishing stone dead, but it can do the opposite up here.

Fishing makes your head hurt at times like

edit. One thing I will say is I once fished in a big SE sea that had a strong northerly wind blowing over it. The sea was a mess, I've never seen anything like it, but the codling loved it!

know what you mean Davy, about making your head hurt....lol
On the subject of easterly winds killing the fishing down south - they also hate it if a high water is after midnight??? whats that all about????

I just found it really strange, that a couple of weeks ago, there seemed to be lots of fish from the usual marks....and the last couple of days have seen the sea lifting, the tides weren't that bad, I had good quality bait, and no fish to show for my efforts - thats why I decided to go and have a look at my records- and came up with that solution!!!!!! -

      thats my excuse anyway....!

Hopefully, the wind swinging brings a few lunkers our way this weekend...

We've had this discussion before Paul and I would agree with you about the high pressure theory. Fish are very sensitive to air pressure and high pressure gives them the feeling that water is shallower than it is. Imagine that on our beaches where the water might only be 4' deep. Low pressure has the opposite effect and, I believe, improves catch rates. Don't suppose it affects piers as much or places like Eyemouth where the water's so deep.

Don't get talking about matches coming up Paul or they'll be off again, when it's just gone quiet. We were just sneaking up to take the higher ground so as to be able to cut them off at the pass.......type of thing.

                  A thousand apologies sir...lol
I do hope the north team get enough rods out....would like to see an even contest.....

come on Davyred....you and I should fish for the north side, give them a fighting chance in otherwise foriegn ground for them.....

I reckon 20lb.of whiting from the hall beach should help there total bag weight...and if there's a sea on...ho ho...Ryhope will defo produce codlings on the night...

I'm in agreement with the low pressure theory as well. Years ago a friends fatha would only fish in low pressure weather systems. He did well from it as well. The old s*d would only fish his fave shots in the mankiest of weather so as to keep his secrets to himself. Few years ago he once gave us a tip, checked the weather, checked his magic book and sent us up to Foxton. Yes we all caught, I had 5 fish for 24 lb!.

As far as I'm aware paul its the groin south shields to roker pier including the pier if its open. Haven't read anything to say otherwise unless i have missed something.

I totally agree with paul and david about the low atmospheric pressure theory, it give's the fish a sense of more water over their backs, especially if you are fishing on making tides. i have found over the years that fishing in these conditions, the fish are there right in front of you in very shallow water.
