I'm tying to get money together at the minute for a kompressor ss. Gary Pye said the Excalibur is the one to have but at that price range it's too much for me. I'd keep the reel I use now as its a proper power house, abu 7000, old model one though not the newer one. It's about 10 year old what my dad used to use and it's still going to this day.

On a pier I'd just use an old komp ss, I think the newer 13-6ft - 14ft rods would be too long on a pier and a bit clumsy, with a silver saltist 30. But for shore I'd love an Excalibur teamed with one of those Penn torque jobbies. Roll on lotto!!!!!

If going el cheapo-ish and not into daft money
You cant beat a afaw clubman plus and a blue diawa 7ht mag
Cracking combo, the reel wont cover the rough stuff but idiot proof against the wind and a capable of decent distance with the clubman
            perfect for pier work

pier rod i would go cheap rt axcelarator penn 525 , if you are wanting the best then get a zziplex z tech tkl, for rough ground , if your after distance from a beach rod otg or pendulum zziplex zti evo as no equal imho and a abu 65 magged up or blue 7ht tweaked

Agree 100% but Penn 525 is usually a bit over gunned for pier work especially on the lighter rods. Knocks the balance to sh*t
If its rough ground though its usa penn 525 all the way (invincible)
                              I use the akios 666 shuttle/7ht on the pier paired with either clubman/conoflex source/imax 5 stroke 6
