just seen the security guy this morning coming of pier so I drove down and asked him what was happening, he said as far as they are aware, they got told 3-4 weeks to repair pier, but when they have looked at the damage it was worse than they originally thought so looks like a while longer.

Call me a miserable old cynic but you can't help but wonder what extra damage the northerly storm forecast for the next few days is going to do

It is getting a right hammering just driving past and the sea is covering the pier.
Or well might open next year as it is bound to have damaged it more.

I checked out the roker webcam:xSunderland City Council: Roker Beach Webcam
yesterday and there were some pretty huge waves going right over the pier.

It cant be doing any good for the areas that are already damaged.

Lets face it, SCC arent bothered about Anglers, 90% of whom cause too much bother for them with their thoughtless ways & the filth they leave around.
I would guess that unless we have a long settled spell, the pier will be closed for quite some time. They wont be in a hurry.

I suppose you can't really blame them, the pier is almost certainly more of a liability than an asset to the council.

Much cheaper and easier to leave it closed till next spring, given that any repairs may well be undone in the next big blow or there might not be time between blows, to get anything decent done anyway

If anything I'd say the opposite Bob. Considering the crap (sometimes literally) left behind by anglers and so-called anglers on Roker and the Wear marks Sunderland council remain pretty supportive of sea angling. The lads in the resorts office are never less than helpful, they've always tried to get the pier opened as soon as they can and there are no marks out of bounds unless they are very dangerous (old north pier) or dock company property. Sunderland council sponsor a yearly angling festival and allow unfettered access to Hendon prom for anglers and their vehicles all year round.

Compared to Hartlepool council who appear to actively hate sea anglers Sunderland council should be applauded (now get the bloody pier open!)

i manged to see how bad the pier got battered. for some reason even though i was windy as hell in durham, me and my pal decided to go on our trip. turned up to roker and saw the water crashing into the poor pier.

so off the s shields we went to find that closed too.
