ok folk planning on fishing ssp for the first time just after a little information on the different venues that fish best day and night and on the flood and ebb. Bait wise crab, lug, and rag must be the norm. and the best side to fish off into the river or sea side. a saved two links which I spotted on the forum with local marks on.

Gate closes at 7.30pm (unless there's a comp on, then who knows when or if or did it close!!!). So you have to climb around it - safe enough on the wall side, but does involve a bit of a clamber. Park in the Dunes car park - £3 for full day, but that gets locked at 10pm, apart from the bit nearest the road, so park there if you want to get out after 10.

Take plenty of leads and rigs. Once you learn the pier and how to fish the different marks you can fish and lose very little gear but it's a learning curve and newbies will often lose a lot of tackle.

Make sure you have an extra long shock leader on; it's quite a drop from the top of the wall to the sea especially as the tide ebbs towards low and you don't want a fish in the wash at the edge of the pier with a few feet of lighter line still to go before the shockleader.

If you are not getting fish at one mark then move. The pier is a mile long and has loads of marks all along it which will fish at different stages of the tide. Don't automatically think you need to be fishing off the end; it was around this time last year a near double figure cod was caught at the rail end...

Will this be similar story if fishing the walkway or the groyne.

When I fished the walkway the other week I went down for low water which was 6 and fishes until about 10 or 11. Couple of small stuff and then once it started to get dark had a couple of codling which were small. Used a pulley pennel rig and 5oz grip lead. The tides were small at the time and this seemed to be the best as opposed to the bigger tide which I fished a few weeks before and the tide pull was quite hard which resulted in snags.

Small tides this weekend so The Walkway should be fine. In fact with Roker closed (I was planning to fish the Barrier) I might end up there myself if I can't find the energy to head north of the Tyne

Im in the sick at the minute and can't fish because I've torn muscles in my shoulder so I've sorted a date at the end of the month when hopefully I'm better lol. Heading to the walkway on the 28th, counting down the days to wet a line
