  • nets on beach

On friday when i was on the pier i watched 2 boats go out and put nets right across the sluice bay, from the astley arms to about middle toilets. One of the boats was only about 1/4mile off. Same boat netted cambois beach aswell. This has to be illegal, but no-one seems to do anything about it.

If you think someone is operating illegally you can get in touch with Defra north on 01670731399 or Defra south on 01482339690

Waste of time Jim, been down that road loads of times, they are only interested if the nets are out to catch Salmon/Seatrout or bass.

I wonder.... would going out and 'adjusting' their nets be anymore or less illegal than putting them out in the first place??

for what its worth, 80lb braid on a slosh 30 will bring a lobster pot in if its in casting range, just have to take it gently and hand ball it in bit by bit.

they're usually magic those lobster pots that are close in... soon as you get one in, you often find a bit of string attached with another one on the end.... and another... and another... and another

OK Terry, so are you saying it is better to just ignore it.

What was the outcome then? Did you phone DEFRA and was anything done?
If no-one does anything about it then it'll just continue.

What makes you think that these boats are operating illegally, they could be licensed vessels which makes it perfectly legal for them to shoot the nets more or less anywhere.

If the boats are unlicensed i would report them.

I was down at Seaham on Saturday morning and the same was happening along the Hall Beach. It's difficult enough trying to catch what few fish are out there without having to compete with the nets. If the boats are licensed then fair enough, they have a living to earn, but if they are not then something should be done about it.

There's a discarded / lost net right at the south end of the chemical beach as well. We made contact with it a couple of times .

No Jim, i am merely pointing out the fact that Defra just seem NOT to care.

I wish there was a way of stopping this sort of thing however short of blowing the b**t***s out of the water what can be done.

All anglers efforts seem to go unnoticed and thats not right.

Fair enough Terry but negative posts like the above don't help.

I thought Cambois beach was designated as a Bass nursery/breeding area so surely they shouldn't be netting there anyway?
