  • 1st time on the float

Back on shields pier yesterday afternoon, I'd thought I'd seen the last of the pier till next summer but I was kicking my heels and the weather was spot on so I thought; " Stuff it!".

Having passed a fairly big group of lads, fishing about halfway up, I'd thought I might struggle to find a spot but I got to the end to find it almost empty and was soon pelting out the mackerel feathers.

I'd been going about an hour, then moved across to the small wall and finally pulled in a single mackerel. I thought; 'champion, lets have a few more'. I never got another touch but I plugged away for about another hour and lost a couple of sets of feathers, so then moved back across to the other side, where the end steps start.

I fished here for about 30mins then I noticed that there was something on my line, it looked a bit odd, then I realised the tip eye of my rod had come off and was away down the line!

I wound in and as I had nothing to fix it with, I broke down the rod and reel and was thinking about going home, then I thought I'd give the little spinning rod I'd taken with me a go.

I decided to have a go with a float next to the steps, so I gutted the mackerel I'd caught earlier, chopping up the guts and scattering it in the water close in below my spot.

I put a 1/2" wide by about 2" long slice of mackerel on the hook, and dropped the rig down the side, with the depth set at about 12ft. It had just settled, when down it went and I was into a coalie!

I pulled it in after letting it run about a bit and found it was about 14" long, no idea what weight but a hell of a fighter on the little spinning rod

I caught another 14 in the space of about 2 hrs, of varying sizes from 6" tiddlers to nicer little fish like the first one. I chucked the odd scrap of mackerel over the side from time to time, which seemed to keep them interested for a good while but then it seemed to die off.

Another lad came across from the main wall, (I think from by the blocks) and set up next to me, filleting a few mackerel on the steps and chucking the carcasses into the water. As soon as he did that, the fish came back on and he was pulling them in every other chuck, with me catching occasionally but nothing like as often as him

I had another 6 or 7 in the final hour and a half

I thought catching the mackerel was good fun but this was ten times better!

I can see me fishing well into the autumn now, at least if the fish keep coming in on the float anyway

I need some better line though, as the Fladen 12lb stuff I've got on my little spinning reel is crap and keeps coming off in loose coils and kinks.

Any recommendations for a decent line to use?

I used to use Maxima chameleon for coarse fishing.

    cheers

Think I saw u I was fishing at 44. The lad who was next to you usually fishes the blocks but water was low. He had dark greenish clothing cap and sunglasses. Also had mountainbike.

Mick. ( I was the big lad with cap and sunglasses on and brown t-shirt).
Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

I'm going to have to sort out a NESA cap or something, I've often seen the same faces on the pier this summer and it would be canny to have a bit of crack with other members off here but you can't tell who's who

I was the little short arxe in shorts, green t shirt and sunglasses

        cheers
