  • WEB CAMS

Jim (willywetegg) mentioned \"webcams\" in Mikes\' post re. neoprene waders. So as not to divert Mikes thread away from his original topic, I thought it best to start this one.

Jim, I\'ve wanted (for ages) to be able to put a link up to a web cam showing part of the N.E. coast - or even possibly have our own.

I don\'t know just what would be involved in us having \"our own\" (on the techie side), but there\'s all sorts of other things that would be just TOO prohibitive for us. Things such as \"wayleave agreements\" - for those who may not know what they are, basically it\'s permission from a property owner for somebody to mount equipment on their property - this permission usually comes at a price, though. Then there\'s planning permission, etc., etc.....
I\'ve tried the obvious sites (Port of Tyne, etc), to try to find an existing coastal webcam.... but....no web-cam

Never mind.....one day, mebbies, we\'ll be able to log in to NESA and check out the sea state in moving pictures........(?)

    Tony,
Have a look at this one I found. I know its St Abbs and a bit far away, but its still the North Sea

I have often toyed with the idea of putting a web cam on my chimney.

I might have a bash at experimenting this summer - I have to finish off some work on the roof anyway

If I get Whitley \'Baywatch\' up and running I will post it on NESA.

getting a camera mounted is probably the easy bit. Next problem wouyld be the need for a permannet web connection, if you have broadband/adsl then great - as long as it is within cable reach of the camera! and then you\'d have to be able to amend the pages here to put the neccessary code together to display the images. I\'m pretty sure the BB as it stands wouldn\'t handle it, unless we could get full access to the server to create pages of our own, or heavily tweak these ones.

Mark, I do have a permanent Internet connection, a £12 USB repeater link would extend the cable down to my home office, I could publish it to my broadband website, and all NESA members would have to do is click on a link on the \'links page\'. - Dead easy!

However, my wife keeps reminding me of the million-and-one other jobs I promised to do! - Which, incidently, includes finishing off the work on the roof!

Unfortunately, one has to strike a balance between fishing and marital harmony - but, it would be really very cool to have a sea-state Web cam

The only other problem might be the bandwidth of the server that publishes the feed. UK isp\'s suck. Bandwidth is appalling, get more than a handful of people trying to vie the feed and its gets very slllooowwwwwwwwww.

If you do want to set it up I\'ll give you some web space for it.

The new server I got last year just upgraded its data connection, so I\'ve now got 8 x 2Gbps leased lines plugged into it! so far its only hosting a handful of sites. the irony here is I\'m stuck with a dial up connection at my end!

That reminded me Tony. As promised I still have a can of worms here for you. Must remember to bring them through to Shields soon. lol.

                        LOl, Jim.....
I did wonder if it would jog any memories about my post a while ago, (I had had a few sherbets at the time), about the possible virtues of canned bait. :P

I\'ll be out having several more sherbets tomorrow night (tonight, now) - it\'s Ians\' birthday (19) and he passed his driving test last month.
I\'ll restratin myself from posting on the Board when I get back....lol
