    Keep up the good work.
    Hooray...someone with common sense... ....
As for debate, thats actually quite laughable on this forum mate!
If you happen to mention anything on here that they don't agree with, then they gang up on you like a pack of wolves! I've learned that points of view are welcomed on this forum - as long as it's agreeable to everyone else!
How anyone can accuse someone of being mindless, and knowing less than they have forgotten? That quote seems to have been lost in all of this!
The point that was being made, was that the area in question was dubious, as hooking and landing a very big fish was indeed very doubtful! Ok, so the fish was tied off! Not exactly on par with playing a double on the beach and enjoying every bit of the fight. Just bullied in to the bottom of the cliff, can't lift it, tie it off! I decided to phone a well known north eastern angler today to ask him his views on this subject, as I think some of the critisism aimed towards me is unfair. He has in fact fished this very venue, and lost two very big fish from here, and he told me he wouldn't ever fish there again, as it was pointless, it does hold big fish, but you can't get them up! His words not mine!

YoursTruly, I wasn't having a go at you - but you took to the offensive at me immediately, because my point of view was different to yours. It was a fantastic fish, a fish of a lifetime in fact, but I don't want to sound patronising towards you, but all I said was what was the point of fishing there if you can't lift the fish? It obviously holds very big fish, I've seen the ground you're fishing into. It would be interesting to know what you're biggest fish (landed of course) is from there?

Just accept that a debate will always have two sides, the fors and the againsts. I was the latter, and becoming personal towards someone's angling ability was wrong.

Paul, if you look back, Terry never said that. He said...

'few mindless words said by anglers who probably dont even no as much as i have forgotten!'

Considering the bloke was gutted about what happened, I think your first post wasn't exactly diplomatic....

"Of course it's a waste of time...you've just proved it... I chucked it back for the rats... - seems like a waste of a very big fish to me."

"I decided to phone a well known north eastern angler today to ask him his views on this subject, as I think some of the critisism aimed towards me is unfair. So does this mean that no-one should fish from there? Your well known north east angler obviously fished it a lot to lose 2 very big fish. Did you have a go at him for going back after he'd lost the first?

A good few years back, I was fishing the South pier (when you legally could). There was a good northerly sea running along the length of the pier and the fishing was good. Anyway, I hit into a cod that, when I got it to the side, looked 15lb+. I couldn't take it round the washend as the swell was coming over. Theres no steps on the outside of the pier, so I had one choice - to handball it. I got it maybe 6ft clear of the water, and then the quick release parted. I was gutted as the fish was gut hooked, so I knew I had a good chance of getting it up. But what I was more gutted about was the fact that the fish WAS gut hooked, and I'd just lifted it 6ft by that hookhold - it can't have done the fish any good. If I were a betting man, I'd say the fish never survived.

Now would you class that as a waste of a fish? Was I in the wrong for fishing there because I had next to no chance of getting a big fish up onto the top of the pier?

Everyone fishes where they like to fish. You like the Ryhope beaches, I like the Sunderland piers, and Terry likes his cliff marks. What ever fate brings us fishing wise, no-one ever should be told that where they fish is a waste of time, becauseto that person, they're doing what they love doing - they're fishing.
