Take it you've fished Bempton then??? - would be interesting to see how you "proper cliff- anglers" would cope on there....
I've fished it, makes Marsden cliffs look like a kerb on the roadside!
What, you didn't have enough line on your reel?????
You have a pop at someone having a point of view, and then think no-one knows how to fish a cliff mark!
Everyone's entitled to have a say, afterall, this is a forum!

hi i have read alot of posts on this subject and if it was me who caught this tremendous fish i would have done the same thing not just to see what it weighed but i would be more curious to see what it was, losing a big fish is one thing but not knowing what it was is another if terry had not tied it up and let it go he could have been throwing away a record fish i think this is a important factor he was not to know it was a cod!!!!!! we done.

Penn 525, on page 4 of this thread you inferred that fishing the cliffs was a waste of time( waste of a big fish), yet you took the time to fish bempton.

You mention the difference between bempton and marsden, well there is very little difference bewteen ryhope and marsden.

Someone posts their view which seems to be different from yours and they are having a pop at you, so can we assume because your view is different from ours you are having a pop at us?
If people think you are an idiot, why speak and remove all doubt !

ive kept out of this post
and just sat back and read everyones posts
          im not sucking terry's cock
but i think he is one of the most experienced anglers on this website
he puts hours of fishing in and finding good shots to fish
ok he pulls in a huge fish
cant get it up the cliff
he has the know how to tie it off
          and go down for it
not every cod at the bottom of a cliff has been ate by crabs and rats
          has it
          brih

I have sat back too and read the posts on this thread Graham.

I would take it a step further mate.

Have a proper read and then make a sensible post. If you are not used to fishing cliffs why make a post condemning Terry for what he has done.

Get out there and give it a go you might get a surprise. It is so easy to have a pop at someone when you don't know the full story.

            Jim.

              Well......I've sat back even longer.....hahahaha.

This is just one of those occasional topics where those with completely opposite views will never agree......and I think we all need to respect those views (doesn't matter which camp you sit in).

Life's too short to get het up about who's right & who's wrong.....mebbies both sides are right - mebbies both sides are wrong.......but haway man...................can we call an end to this flippin' bickering.

Ermmmm......that's just my view by the way

Good points though, into nine pages now and nothing is changing.

Having sat back EVEN longer hehe and knowing that a consensus of opinion is sometimes impossible and having never fished the cliffs at Marsden (but feeling I could make a reasonable stab at it if I did) I would like to think that Terry's thought pattern would satisfy us all......

                  - I'll fish here 'cos I might get a good 'un

                  - I've got a good 'un but the boulders at the bottom have defeated me (no different really to getting fast on any rock mark except it's high tide rather than the usual low tide)

                  - I would now love to be able to do something that would allow the fish a chance to escape (and me another chance to catch it) but I can't so I'll do the next best thing - tie it off in the hope of getting it later.

The only problem I can see here is if Terry thought "Can't get you up but I'll have you you bas***d" Don't see that happening do you?

Terry - Cracking Fish, Hopefully next time luck will prevail and you will
get your fish. Keep it up mate I look forward to reading about your
                      successes in the future.

nb, if it does make any difference (however, I doubt it will) I am with the majority, I would have done exactly the same in tying the fish up!

                      Keep it up Terry,

                      Regards

...actually YoursTruly, I didn't say fishing cliffs was a waste of time! I fish the cliffs at Ryhope, sometimes in club matches (Ryhope SAC), and do quite well, just won this years champion angler - AGAIN - as I won it last year too - and we have turn outs of between 90 and 110 competing at each club event. Which makes your statement about people knowing nowt rubbish! (But I wont mention being selected for the NFSA England SQUAD on one occasion - so I think I can say I know a little bit about our game!)
What I was saying was it's probably a waste of time fishing that particular mark where you were, as retrieving a fish is touch and go. AND, in another thread I also gave you an apology for being hasty with my answer.
                        Hope that sorts that out??

I have Just getting back from a wee holiday in Frankfurt ( 0 - 0 ,but German beer isnt to bad) and then Centre Parcs for the weekend via york to drop my mate to the train station on our way back from stanstead

                          BUT

after reading what has gone of while i have been P*ssing it up WOW - to those who are against tieing it off please stop fishing now ,if you are that concerned the actions are a waste of time ,the reason i say this is unless you are fishing with some kind of SONAR device you cannot possibly know what size your fish could be ,and while sitting on a comfy jetty or pier you might just hook into a 17lb fish of a lifetime ,BUT ALAS get tied up round that shopping trolly/Old Bike frame/lobster Dahn/or owt else that can snag your end tackle ,I for one Only ever worry fishing the Cliffs if its in the Shields Open - because that is a Compitition ,and losing a fish of any size while having to tie it off would be a Mare ,if deep down you knew that it would have scooped the board

and yes Sless not every fish that comes loose/drops off /tied off is attacked by Rats ,some just swim round a rock pool with a 6/0 pennel and pully rig until they get captured AGAIN Ha Ha

Oh and by the way - Well Done Terry ,nice fish all the same

I am sure you have taken on board ALL the advice that has been written on these pages ,well maybe not ALL Ha Ha

                            Well done terry.
I would have no problem with tying a fish off. I would have called in reinforcements Eg. fresh flask, tent, sleapingbag, fags, bog paper,it would have taken a team of wild horses and a strait jaket to get me away from a 17pounder, Fish of a lifetime for me.

What about a transistor radio so you could turn it up to drown out the sound of the rats having a good old munch....hahahahahaha.....
