no offence taken at all mate,my personal opinion is people shouldnt tie fish off...as now you probably know by the time the tide ebbs and you retrieve the fish you hooked, odds on its been well spoiled by crabs....
Just my point of view
next time you fish that mark would you do the same if you hooked a big fish ? ie. tie the fish off,weigh it.then throw it back for the crabs?

Cliff fishing is what I do most of, Some of the cliffs(Cowbar/Boulby) are over 250ft high and the only option you have when you get a large fish on is to tie it off and wait until you can retrieve it from the bottom.
So to me he done everything right, he was just unlucky with the rat thing.
Just a thought for next time tho, if its only 20-30ft down why not invest or make a cliff/pier gaff, they are the dogs for lifting massive fish up short distances.
All I can say is well done that man for catching a very very nice lump of cod.

Theres been some absolute rubbish posted on here regarding Terrys catch.

Terry has stated on here that he was gutted that the rats had got to the fish, and so had to throw it back. Now if he had gone down, and the rats hadn't been at it, everyone one of us would have been congratulating him for catching a fantastic fish. Instead, because of nature,(ie the rats taking bites out of the fish), he's slagged off on here. How small minded can you get.

The lad has gone out to catch fish - any fish. Now what are the odds of him getting a fish that size?

At the end of the day, Terry fished where he wanted to fish, it was his tackle that he used, he got his bait, he brought it in using his rod and reel, so its his fish, to do with what he wanted.

I hope and pray that everyone of you who has criticised Terry for this are put in a similar situation one day, just to see what you would do.

i fish the same area all of the time and like yours truly an everybody else who fishes there with success knows lifting a fish a third of the size of said fish is not easy so all i will say is well done yours

Some people are just being a bit silly, it's great to hear of a fish that size being caught on rod and line from the shore, I bet most can only dream of catching something that size,, believe me it's a great feeling when you do manage it.
He got to catch and see a great fish!!!!!. All I can do is congratulate him, maybe all you should do the same instead of picking fault.

Black cat: answer to your last post, yes to all if i cannot lift the fish.

But on second thoughts next time i go down to souter i'll take more time when assessing the situation and if i think there is a chance of catching anything bigger than 7lbs i will turn away and fish a mark where i cannot catch anything bigger than i can land NOT.

I am pleased to see that we do have some hands on anglers on this board, i was beginning to wonder if the cynics fish at all or just talk about fishing.

...By the way, it was a fantastic fish...well done, and no doubt you've fished this mark for a lot of years - with great success - and lifted good fish successfully too....to be honest, I don't know what I would have done in a similar situation, probably panic...but then again, I fish the cliffs at Ryhope, and lifted fish to 8lbs+, and attempted to lift doubles - unsuccessfully - chances are, the fish would have been knackered anyway probably off being beaten against rocks, cliff edge etc....so, on reflection, I apologise if my reply was a little hasty, although it was a shame on two counts, firstly yours for not being able to show off such an achievment, and secondly, actually knowing your fish was there, you would be able to get when the tide ebbed - but knowing deep down that the rats would in fact have it....never mind, you hooked it and landed it - that is an achievement in itself.....
