has no one thought...instead if tying up..just admitting defeat..ie "i cant land the fish..cut me line and hope it survives" after all..whats the point of going back the next day to retrieve a fish that has been battered against boulders for hours or eaten by crabs...rats
there is a moral in this story and its..dont kill the fish and go back the next day to see "what would have been"

          thank you

To be honest blackcat I'm not sure that would work either mate. What if the line got caught up somewhere. It would still be battered against boulders for hours or eaten by Crabs or Rats. Not sure how high those cliffs are but it would have to be a lot of line.

Wouldn't think twice about tying a fish up and waiting for the tide to drop. We are talking a 17lb fish here that to some is the fish of a life time..as for landing it .* i cant land the fish*.how else would you land it ? *cut the lline and hope it survives* bet it has a good chance with a hundred yards of mono a rig and a weight attached mate good thinking and very considerate to the fish..
Some of these marks are fished coz they produce good fish..last year one of nesa's members fished newbiggin cliffs and landed a 12lber in exactly the same way his first doubler he sat on it and waited for the tide to drop before retreiving a very nice fish..not one person said ..shouldn't have done that mate.. It is a shame the rats got there first but Im sure terry feels that more than anyone ..Again mate well done a crackin fish and gives us all hope and inspiration.

                  Terry,

Look back, I never said fishing was a waste of time, just that this was a waste of a fish.

                  Alan,

No I do not always fish sandy beaches and yes I have lost traces.
As we all know they corrode very quickly and I have heard many stories and seen a couple of cases of anglers catching fish with hooks and line attached.

I have fished piers yes, but never had anything large from them. If I did I would probably walk it to the steps and try and retrieve it from there.

I never said I have not lost a fish in the kelp. Yes there is a chance of losing fish in kelp but that is a risk I am prepared to take. The fish still has a chance of surviving.

Yes alan your right I have never had a big fish from the shore, always small ones, biggest i think has been 5lb but I can live with it. I do not put anywhwere near as much time and effort into it that probably everyone else on this site does. So much so that I've never been yet this season.

I have never fished cliffs but personally would have thought it to be to much of a risk if you know there's always a good chance of losing it in the boulders.

As you say it is my opinion.
As my dad used to say....Man who go to bed with itchy bum......wake up with stinky finger!!!

                  Ian

what a session you had, i bet the adrenalin was pumping like mad.
well done mate , fish of a lifetime , well to me it is anyway, i think rat poison could be the remedy of the day down there and lots of it.
shame on not having a filllet of the fish , and like you i would of chucked it back as well if rats had been all over it.
cant take no chances with your health mate.

Penn 525: and hope you enjoy your life.

Ian W: Dont knock the cliffs until you have tried them!

Black cat: i did not have any other option but to tie it off as it was wedged between two rocks, leaving me no other choice but to do what i did.
If i had just pulled the line it would have snapped and that line would have been lying around and no doubt one or two of you cynics would have had just as much to say!

Oh and by the way, in future read the post properly before you make a posting, "you hope it survives" i had already stated that the rats had been at it and i threw it back for the crabs which would suggest it was dead.

i.e "hope it survives" was in reply to willy's post regarding the fish betting snagged by trailing mono if your line had been cut

Wot a cracking fish Terry ! under the circumstances there was nothing else you could have done ! You hooked it- you fought it -and brought it to the side ! and you went to retreive it
You must have been absolutly gutted to see your prize distroyed at the hands of the local rat population ,and you said you cried all the way home ..... what angler wouldnt !
Me personally would still be crying now , well done on a cracking catch
                              respect where its due
                              Cheers Bert

Black cat: no offence mate but you have now totally lost me on this one, i didnt think about telling the whole story word for word.

Anyway i dont know why i am even bothering to explain my actions, and you really dont want to know what i truly think about cynics ( i wont even go there) cos personally i wouldnt drag myself down to that level.

I cant believe i am getting concerned about a few mindless words said by anglers who probably dont even no as much as i have forgotten!
