Attention for user's of South Shields Pier..

Just heard a whisper from someone in the know, so to speak.
Apparently, the Port of Tyne Authority had a meeting last Thursday, and have decided that ALL fishing will be stopped from the pier! Only people who will be able to fish from the pier will be members of South Shields and District Sea Angling Club. This is all due to the rubbish that anglers leave and generally leaving the place as a sh*t tip!
Any clarification from someone?
Like I say, it was just a whisper, but if it's true, it's just another case of anglers shi**ing in their own nest AGAIN....

Don't know the full details, but one of the members of the Alnwick SAC told me yesterday that they have closed and fenced most of amble pier also. When I find out I will let you know.

The gate at the end of Amble pier has been moved to about half way along the concrete walkway.
With the spikes sticking out about two feet on either side, the only way onto the very end is over the top.....not something I'd like to try in the wet.

If the object of this exercise was to stop fishing from the end, why did they just not move gate to the end, where it would still be possible to cast to the same places as from the end ?

Or is this too much like common sense?

Spoken to the Station Officer at Boulmer Caostguard and he says it's to stop people going all the way down when the big seas are on during the winter months.
Maybe after the accident a couple of years back?
Dunno about common sense Tony but like you say it would probably have made more sense to move the gate.

maybe cos
a, gettinga bin wagon (even a small one) along to empty em is a no go

but more likely because:

b, the head the balls that frequent the peier would have a ready supply a crap to throw around and instant bonfires when the urge takes them

part of me thinks, good, close it, maybe the eejits tha leave their crap behind don't deserve to be there, teach em a lesson etc....but... what would they do?? I doubt they'd see the errors of their ways, they'd just fish somewhere else and leave their crap behind as per usaul, therfore just moving the problem elsewhere

I heard the same story on friday afternoon.
Some of it probably true and i hate to be the one to say it but it is sadly down to the anglers that fish the pier (however not all) and its case of the minority spoiling it for the majority yet again.
It was not that long ago TC arranged a clean up on the pier, this should have been enough to warn anglers about the dangers of loosing it as a fishing spot, but alas the litter problem has got worse and no one could blame the PTA for closing the pier(if its true).
If it is only a rumour then lets hope those responsible for making the mess stop immediately, cos the next time it may be fact.

Well, this rumour goes around every year........who knows - maybe THIS time it's true - and I, for one, wouldn't blame the PTA if that's what they HAD decided to do.

Aye Terry, ya right - several years ago, I organised a NESA clean up of the pier (however, due to N.E. gales and the sea crashing over the pier walls on the Sunday we'd arranged with the PTA to do it, the pier watchman wouldn't allow us on - for our own safety).

Just to show how much NESA members cared and wanted to take part in the clean up.......there were several people turned up to volunteer their services who had never even been on Shields pier before - let alone fished from it.

This was accompanied by a couple of articles in the Shields Gazette, stating who "NESA" was and what we were trying to achieve (ie get anglers to act responsibly and take away their litter).

I also spent several Friday nights erecting "bin your litter" and "take your litter home" notices along the length of the pier (having first obtained permission from the PTA to do so). However, every time I erected them, (and they were pretty robust things), they were cut down within a day or two (I assume by those who take great delight in leaving their crap behind).

I'll contact the Estates Manager for the PTA tomorrow (if I've got time) and try to find out what the craic is with this latest rumour.

Great post TC.....A lot of the SAMF matches I fish it's actually in the rules....
"...your peg must have no rubbish at the end of the match, WHETHER IT'S YOUR'S OR NOT...pegs will be checked and any pegs left with rubbish on them regardless of what it is -that angler will be disqualified"
But thats just in match fishing....
Maybe Sea Angler could run a feature on taking your litter home...OR WOULD ALL YOU SA HATER'S SAY "WHY TELL US THAT, WE ALREADY KNOW HOW TO PEEL A CRAB, TIE A KNOT....AND HOW TO TAKE OUR RUBBISH HOME..."

Even tho I know it's a good mark in the right conditions I hate S/S pier for all the reasons in this post. I fished it once this summer season for mackerel and maybe the odd pollock and was put off for another decade by the rubbish and the stink of **** on the end.
