        Honestly they don't hurt if they nip you...but there is a size vs strength of bite issue, the bigger they are, the harder they nip, and the bigger nippers they have, its more the shock of the nip that makes you jump than anything else.

        I had a huge 30" ragworm a couple of weeks ago, and its nippers were ½" long, had me snake wrangling lol... so do be careful with the bigger ones, but generally they aren't strong enough to push through the skin.

          Been nipped loads of times and it doesn't hurt. The best thing to get if you don't want to get nipped is a worm baiting needle, they are worth every penny.

          Tight lines.

The only way to get them off is to squeeze their head with a pair of pliers; and make sure you have your pliers handy when using ragworm because if one takes hold of you, you only have about 10 seconds to get it off before it starts burrowing into your flesh. It's not bad enough that they burrow into you but then they start injecting you with venom. The venom will then begin to dissolve you from the inside out.
              So be very careful if you decide to use ragworm;

              But the most dangerous bait is lugworm: you don't even want to know what lugworm is capable of. Nasty little suckers.

                The worst ones I ever had were little maddie type at St Ives; the little buggers were latching on any chance they could. Was like dipping a chocolate hand in a weight watchers meeting

                              its the shock of it that makes you jump.

                              in over 40 years ive only had 2 draw blood.

                              one big worm got a nipper down the side of my nail. [that one did hurt]

                              the other one that drew blood was only 4in long last year.

                              threading them down the hook doesnt make a difference, they can still turn there heads inside out and get you on the line.

                                Knew this guy who got nipped of a king Rag. Managed to wrestle it off and thought nothing about it until a few weeks later when the blood poisoning set in. Was so far gone the hand had to come off! Other complications set in later and .....................
