I'm going on holiday in September to Majorca and I might take a travel rod with me and some lures. Has anyone tried it before? I've seen people pull some canny fish in when I've been before.

I've been told you need to have a fishing licence to fish the sea within spanish waters, and to get one is a real pain, even though it only costs a couple of euro's...
I have also been told that the water bailiffs over there (at least the spanish ones) are really vigilant and will take action against anyone not having a licence.

where you going.alcudia is great for mullet and bass in the canals that run all over the place,i was hooking one then giving the rod to wor las or one of my daughters to wind in.i just bought a cheap tele rod and reel over there and left them in the hotel room when we left,if id knowen it was going to be good id have taken a better rod and reel,id take some small treble hooks and crush the barbs down, just buy a loaf of bread and mould a bit round the hook so it floats then free line for the mullet, great fun when you hook one.you can see loads swimming around along with some bass and there was some belters among them.for the bass I was using fish skin from the fish n chips we bought and try let it sink down to the bottom.i never bought a permit and never got asked for one but you could get in bother if asked so up to you.

Thanks for the replies lads. I'm going to Palma nova. I didn't know you needed a permit to fish and I wouldn't have a clue how to get one. It's kinda put me off the idea now though. Knowing my luck the guardia will pull their pistols out on me. Do you need the permit even if you are releasing the fish? All the gear, no idea.

I haven't fished Majorca but I've caught a few species in the canaries, I heard your supposed to get a license but I walked past loads of coppers and they never asked. Majorca might be different, I've been to Ibiza a few times but didnt go fishing and I've wondered what's out there. There must be something even if its just small stuff.
I'd pop over to dragon carp at peterlee and get a few light jig heads. I had a bit of fun in turkey this year using 1.8g size 10's on a light telescopic rod with 6lb braid and a four foot length of 4lb flurocarbon to the hook.Species 2012.
Uk. Codling,whiting,
Lanzarote. Scorpionfish,damselfish,red grouper,dusky grouper,red bream,white bream,red snapper,vermillion snapper,ornate wrasse,

I fished for sharks etc from a boat last September in Portugal. It was obviously a good sunny trip, with Dolphins beer food etc. But the guys who run the boat take out tourists every day, so now after the experience, they wouldn't let everyone catch sharks all day, it wouldn't make economic environmental sense. You are on holiday they take your money chuck crap beer down your throat and feed you, a few days later you go home!!
We did catch a few mackerel and dorada(black bream) but the boat was packed, the skippers mate rigs you up, so you just stand and wait
However next time i'm taking a telescopic beach caster, I saw loads of Dorada caught from the shore, about 50 yards out!!
I know its not Spain, but everywhere I've tried abroad has been similar on the boats. License was included in day price

Regarding getting caught, people might have got away with it, but I've heard of people being heavily fined and losing all their gear. I was told by somebody I know that lives over there that the Spanish police system is different to ours and the Guardia might not be bothered, but if the wildlife police turn up it would be a different matter. They are into checking permits etc.
