  • Red line

Got told today that fish cannot see the colour red so this person uses red line anybody know anything about this or is it a leg pull

Red under water looks grey. They deeper down you go, the lighter the \'grey\' gets and less light penetrates the surface, So at about 10-15m I can\'t see it.

Don\'t know about the fish like !.

I had a browse around the Internet to see what I could find on this.
It would apear to be both true and false - some fish cannot see red wheras others have extremely well developed vision(better than us) in the red part of the spectrum.

when the sea has been turned over and is manky , i dont think the fish would be able to see anything at all ,and the rivers are always full of colour ,its in the mind i reckon , you catch on one set up ,you feel confidant the next time you go out ,but then someone plants a sead of doubt and you then look for something to blame it on when you get nowt. all i know is birds have better eye sight than most species but still fly into my line when i fish the cliff tops ,so work that one out .LOL :P :P

I found some links about fish senses on the Web (see below) these are written with the angler in mind.

Marc is right about the colour, the deeper you go (i.e. the lower the light level) the less colour plays a part in what we see (also what the fish see). Colour receptors in the eye don\'t work very well in low light levels. Consequently, fish (and us) see everything in shades of grey as the light gets dimmer. This is not a case of colours getting darker but the fact that the eye can\'t detect colour at low levels of light.

Anyone fancying some biology homework should read these 3 articles:

I\'ll use anything in dirty water. I make my dad\'s rigs out of yellow powerflex and red amnesia because he kept loosing them in the dark! He catches plenty of fish so I don\'t think it seems to bother them. Also heard of people deliberatly using red hooklengths in doggie matches. Out of choice though I stick to clear lines wherever possible.
