bait for heavy ground kelp

fishing tomorrow of the rocks into kelp,ive got only a small amount of fresh crab and loads of frozen crab,will the frozen be as good,ive been using fresh crab and frozen muscle,also whats rag worm like in the kelp.if I try frozen sand eel and fresh rag ,put on side by side with a baiting tool,want to have a good long session so taking a few different baits.pollock like rag and red cod should take it to.anyone had success with rag/sand eel on the bottom(ill be fishing with heavy gear not float fishing

If i was you and fishing direct into kelp i would stick your mussel on then a frozen crab then a fresh. Or i would try and get some bluey i cant imagine sand eel fishing in kelp but never tried it so dont know. A big mussel razzor bait can work as well as crab. If there is no rock just kelp beds you wont get the fish coming in to eat the crab thats peeling. But you never know good luck mate

at this time of year you won't go wrong with fresh or frozen crab

Half a crab and plenty mussel should see you alright
if the crab are decent size

Agree with the above comments.... I personally love chucking mussel out and find it can out fish crab on a lot of marks... mussel and crab (either fresh or frozen) should see you into fish.... Pollock will take sandeel but your better off with a live bait... not sure about half an eel or something like that... I guess its worth a shot though if you can take two rods.

Half fresh half frozen but don't be afraid to use frozen by itself, seen frozen out fish many time at beadnell this time of year

Half a fresh and a full frozen the frozen will release the scent quicker and the fresh will keep it going for longer.

ill not bother with the rag and sand eels.ive got half dozen poppers so ill take same frozen and couple of bags of muscle.out of interest what size hooks would people use.theres kelpys-pollock and wrasse were im fishing,would a big bait be better than the smaller baits and 1/0 hooks ive been using

I tend to stick with 2/0 for the majority of my fishing and have had big fish on them.... Don't see any reason a cod / Pollock / wrasse wouldn't take a bigger hood though if you feel the need to use one. Always found a 2/0 big enough though. At when a smaller fish is pecking your bait to pieces you still have a better chance of hooking it....

i would fish 3/0 or 4 /0 hooks depending how big ya bait is... personally if it is heavy rock and kelp i fish a single 4/0 with a big bait and leave out till either a fish or crabs take your bait..... keep ya rig simple and a rotten bottom... 30lb or more main line and good luck

4/0 rig as a pollock and a wrasse will take them no problem iif you think there might be wrasse and pollock on that mark if there is no wind leave your reel out of gear or on the ratchet but use a rottom bottom in case it dives straight to a snag. I doubt a wrasse will take crab but you never know i would take 2 rods one with just rag and the other with crab

Never seen it myself always used rag for them but then if a fish is hungry

Crab is by far the best bait for wrasse had hundreds on it even a normal green shore crab will pick out the bigger wrasse put on live

Might give it a try only ever fished for wrasse with rag
