  • Just for the record I had 27 fish or so in last years club season. Three were whiting which were killed. Two possibly three were flats released alive after weigh in. The rest were cod. I didn't weigh in any pollack or wrasse and wouldn't I would look pretty daft sprouting off then doing the same. That's my choice as an angler just as its the same to take em if they are legal size. Never once did I say the young lads were in the wrong I just said it was sad. Maybe one day they'll get a kick out of returning fish maybe not that's not my decision. But I hear it every year " there's no bloody fish" and it can't all be blamed on trawlers we all take fish so were All responsible. I think people got the impression that I kill pollack/ wrasse only in comps I don't kill them full stop.
If they aint there you cant catch em

Pollock and Wrasse are an abundant species on our coastlines, there is a reason for this. IGNORANT people like you who think the only edible white fish in the sea is cod, this is why cod stocks were so depleted the last 30 odd years.

So its fine for the shore angler like yourself to take 21 cod (a depleted species only just starting to recover from overfishing) for a competition, even though you don't eat it. But it is not alright (its sad, your words) to take a few pollock (a very nice eating fish and in abundance in the sea) for the table, unreal mate.

        • 90% of this forum must be ignorant then eh. Maybe I'm wrong it's just I recognise pollack n wrasse as a sporting fish up places like the mull and at abbs. And I also put a lot of cod back. To try and balance things out a drop in the ocean I'm sure but at least I'm trying

I'm a pleasure angler, I fish for the fun of it, if I catch a few sizable fish I'll take a few of them for the table. I would never call a man who takes flounder for his table, even though I wouldn't take it, because that would make me a hypocrite for taking whatever I take regardless of species, do you get me.

                          • Well done on your catch lads. For what it's worth I like to eat Pollock as much as Cod. But I don't catch many of either sadly.

When they are gone it'll be winter again and I'll keep some more. But it's not unusual in any club to give ya catch away to people that do eat them. By returning as many fish as I can I am at least counter balancing what I kill in thd winter. If them pollack were cod then I can see why keeping them. But pollack and wrasse throughout the country aren't really seem as a table fish. That's not to say people don't like to eat em, I don't like marmite or garlic sauce. And I can't chastise people who do kill em. I just think its a shame.
Your right Bout the wrasse not seen as a table fish but pollack definitely is, look in the supermarkets, quite a lot of the fish packaged frozen fish and breaded fish is now pollack
