  • collecting peeler

I've never actually tried it before so i think i'm gunna give it a blast at low water today. the only thing is, is it worth it around here? when people go collecting and get 50 odd or whatever are they from around here or are they driving to the west coast or further afield to get them? i know people probably aint gunna pipe up and give away there fav crab marks i was thinking maybe trying the rock pools between tynemouth and whitley bay, reckon that could get me a few at least? thanks

Go along the middens and round to the haven mate. Along the side of the pier can be decent as well. A little tip though, take something to scrape through the sand and weed. I use the handle off a junior hacksaw.
          Regards Nicky.

Codhead, if you find a crab take the end segment off on of the legs. If it's a peeler you will find a perfectly formed soft leg underneath the segment you have taken off. If there's nothing there then the crab is no good.

no , you twist, turn and pull the last segment from any of the legs , if it reveals flesh underneath its a peeler , if its not a peeler the last digit on the leg simply snaps off .

When you're turning rocks over make sure you put them back where they were. Usually you can return and find crabs under the same rocks time after time, if you visit a spot regularly you more or less know where they are going to be.

Try searching in the hundreds of tyres along the banks of the tyne.
