I know not everyone checks the club results, so here's a picture of Steve Williams with the 19lb conger he caught today at Howick in the Whitley Bay AS summer open match, on a flippin' carp rod of all things (Well, he has knacked his back & can't handle a big rod at the moment - he couldn't even bend down to pick it up for the photo!).
“I think I fish, in part, because it’s an anti-social, bohemian business that, when gone about properly, puts you forever outside the mainstream culture without actually landing you in an institution.”
If it's top secret, then fair enough, but how did he catch it? Was it on float, down the side of the rocks?... He must've shat hisself!!
As far as I know it was on his carp rod, little fixed spool with braid, a 3oz sinker & a 2/0 kamasan uptide hook with a small crab bait - fishing more or less straight down the side in the back gully at Swinedene. Luckily he was using 50lb maxima snood, because after getting it to the top several times & watching it pull back down, he was getting worried about it biting through - fortunately his mate was able to quickly tie a couple of big hooks into some more maxima and the next time he got it to the surface was able to stick one hook into it's head and another into it's back and was able to drag it from the water...as he was doing so the hook-snood finally snapped!
Nice one, Gary.. Just goes to show, dunnit? The great thing about sea fishing is there are monsters lurking in the deep. Great catch. Well done, that man. Conger steaks for a fortnight or so!
