All I'm really against are those cheap & nasty kits that are everywhere - big sticky-out knobs that get in the way, and get bent with the slightest tumble rendering them useless. I saw a lovely job by, I think, Wozza at Keens tackle on a couple of reels - lovely small, neat knob that only stuck out about 5 or 6mm & looked really neat. Some reels, like the new Penn Torques which have no brakes whatsoever really do need magging up to make them useable from the shore - and if I was spending in the order of £400 plus on a new reel then I'd be willing to pay top dollar for a really good mag-job.

I only get thhe small ones from rutherford does a mint job some say if mags were needed they would come as standard good point except the reels that dont come magged are really ment for boats lol the black penn torques are mint reels like but pointless to me as they dont hold enough heavy line dont think there . Is much between a trq and a fathom except 250 quid lol

I manage fine without mags on my saltist.. However my casting benefits from casting with mags for the simple reason that you can adjust it mid-flight

Can't understand magging a reel that isn't meant to be. Saltists, sloshes and fathoms run fine! If you require a magged reel 9 times out of 10 it will already be? Must be missing something from my fishing
