  • Whats going on !?

Just been fishing down Roker for a few hours (bait not Macky bashin), while I was walking off I was studying the water down the side all the way off. The water is crystal clear down to about 12 feet but there is nothing down there. I mean there are no Sandeels or Sprats or anything ! There are mixed theories around some say the water is still too cold others say Norweigan factory ships have cleaned all the Sandeels out. What is the real truth ? Any biology experts out there ?

I doubt the factor ships would catch any of the bait fish, my guess is water temperature, we had quite a cold winter followed by a cold spring followed by a cold summer, so far. Last year we had a mild winter a warm spring then a warm but wet summer.
Happy to help, Keen to learn!

It cud be a mixture of things ie the weathet is behind the cold snap wr had lasted far to long well longer than usual. These factory ships that ppl say are taking every thing and any thing could well be playing there part. But I just think there s bit late they will turn up im sure of it and every one will enjoy smoked makky for the rest of our red hot summer lol well thats my theroy any who

Last week we fished four hours over high tide on the Clyde. Sand eels were all round the edge of the pier, the porpoises were cruising a hundred yards off the pier and the gannets were diving. The only thing missing was the damn mackerel!

I don't have the answer, but I wish they would hurry up and arrive. Need plenty for Whitby trip in a fortnight and of course for eating.

We've just come off the coldest winter / spring for 50 years and the second coldest in the last 100. We have yet to have a decent spell of warm, settled weather without interruption from northerly / easterly air flows.

Going back 25 years to when I was a young man it was always July before we expected the Mackerel fishing to take off properly. People have become spoiled by the mild winters / warm springs of the last few years and expect things to continue that way. Unfortunately nature is not like that, it is unpredictable.

Give it another month and a bit of decent, settled weather and if the summer species are still thin on the ground look for something / someone to blame. But it is only mid June, the weather has been variable so far and it is still early season to be expecting better.

You dont seriously believe the ships have caught every single fish in the sea do you?

Personally, I hope they dont show up, it will be a welcome change

The only reason they havent arrived yet is because of the weather, thats about all there is to it

For me, I couldnt care less whether they turn up or not, I cant think of a worse way to spend a day than to sit there macky bashing all afternoon.

There was a report of a massive haul of mackerel just off hartelpool yesterday so theyre not far away

                        But thats just my opinion

There are plenty of things that can beat mackerel on light gear. Try Bass or Pollack on the same gear.

Agree with one of the lads said on here about it used to be July before they showed. My catch logs show it was rare that they were caught before the end of June.
