All i do is fill a bucket full of water leave it in a warm place not red hot though change twice a day for 2 days this fills them with water and the shell cracks but to keep them for longer you want the opposite a little water in the fridge changed daily will keep for weeks

Squeeze em at the sides between the top shell n legs. If they give they're ready to use. U don't have to wait for them to pop their backs

Stacking box with 1/2 inch sea water in on garage floor so they are wet but can't drown or stacking box with 3 inch sea water and an air pump like ones used in aquariums for fish in my opinion needs to be at leat 50ltrs an hour pump for about 40 crab then check twice a day either splitting there sides or the whit showing above the swimmer flap be vigilant because small crab will peel quick and female hen crab ultra quick once they split there sides I keep in cat litter trays under wet towel in the fridge this holds them back to use as required this is because they react to temp rising which starts there peel cycle.
When in the fridge I put them back in the tank every two days for 10 minutes or so this is known as giving them a drink. Hope this points you in the right direction it's just learning how to do it.
