  • Shields beach nets.

Went for a run along the big beach this morning only to discover a netter right in front of the rattler pub. I do recall someone posting that they caught a bass from here last week.... it would seem these commercial fisherman are monitoring these sites.

What are the laws around netting off the beach? One end of their set up was sat 10yds out of the water with the end of the net all over the sand, the rest of the net went out into the water about 200yds to their boat. Surely this cant be right? If it is allowed then the law clearly should be changed.

years ago bass started showing off a beach in hartlepool, quite a lot around 4lb.

i had heard it was getting netted

i went down one night at low tide to try for a few. as i walked along the beach i saw what looked like a carpet on the beach. when i got up to it, it was a net from the high tide mark right down into the water at low.

when i got to the other end of the beach [1/2 a mile away] two lads with shovels were chatting with another angler and there was another net near them, again from the high tide down to low.

these nets were held down with sand filled carrier bags and burried.

i asked them whos nets they were. they said that only the one near them was theres, the first one i passed at the other end of the beach wasnt. thats ok i said because ive cut it up [ i hadnt] they shot off saying that if i had they were going to shash up my gear.

            needless to say we blanked.

i reported it the next day saying they were taking undersize bass. maff wernt interested but had i said salmon they would have taken a look. i told them that they were also gatting salmon and mullet. they still did nothing.

bass swim along the beach close in so these nets would pick up everything that moved along the beach.

they totally cleaned the fish out. it was another 4 years before i caught a fish over 6in in that area.

in recent years numbers started to pick up but again as soon as the lads found out they were driving down every tide in 4x4s. this time someone reported them and i,m sure they were prosectuted. i can remember them being caught.

still theres only small fish about.

so if your beach is getting netted regularly say goodby to any hopes of a better fish for a while.

I have seen salmon nets on the beach in the past but this net was actually dug into the beach at one end... something the salmon fishing lads don't seem to do which made me sceptical about it being lawful. I believe it is in response to recent bass catches and that is what these netters are targeting.

Not sure about the distance from the shore but the netters are there every year targeting salmon and possibly Sea Trout.

not that easy when your on your own on a beach in the middle of the night, confronted by 2 blokes with spades.

the lads who net the beach have as much right (within the law) to catch as anglers do in my opinion. it might mean less for us to catch but they have kids to feed.

everyone winges about the cod stocks yet the still go to the chippy for cod and chips.

too many double standards when it involves a fish
