  • Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day?

    Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day?
    Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
    Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
    And Summer's lease hath all too short a date:
    Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
    And oft' is his gold complexion dimm'd;
    And every fair from fair sometime declines,
    By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd:
    But thy eternal Summer shall not fade
    Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
    Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade,
    When in eternal lines to time thou growest:

    So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
    So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

    Where's the damn Mackerel!!

          I thought that was a bit harsh eh Duncan, just trying to bring a smile on a beautiful sunny day while stuck at work! Oh well Brian is obviously not a fan of Shakespeare!

          Was out on my own spinning for a couple of hours last night, not a sniff, not even a Coalie! Still waiting for that elusive first fish of 2013!!

          Will try again on Saturday.

          Shetland must be beckoning you mate? I can hear it calling - Duncan, Duncan! Really hope you get among the big boys. Can't wait for the report.

                In order to become "old & wise", you must first be young & stupid.
                Age and experience will beat youth and enthusiasm every time.
                Youth and Skill is no match for Age and Treachery.

                      Wondering if even the start of July is too early!? Better not be. Our only chance of the Summer!

                          A cultured man, unlike our Brian it seems Though you want to be careful, you'll be seeing Mackerel in your sleep soon...

                          When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see,
                          For all the day they view things unrespected;
                          But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee,
                          And darkly bright are bright in dark directed.
                          Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright,
                          How would thy shadow's form form happy show
                          To the clear day with thy much clearer light,
                          When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so!
                          How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made
                          By looking on thee in the living day,
                          When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
                          Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay!
                          All days are nights to see till I see thee,
                          And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.

                              Fish, oh Fish
                              So little matters!

                              Whether the waters rise and cover the earth
                              Or whether the waters wilt in the hollow places,
                              All one to you.

                              Aqueous, subaqueous,
                              Submerged
                              And wave-thrilled

                              As the waters roll
                              Roll you.
                              The waters wash,
                              You wash in oneness
                              And never emerge.

                              D. H. Lawrence at his best. So many writers, whom we'd never expect, have vivid insights into angling matters. The obvious ones - Hemingway, Walton, Ransome and Kipling are supplemented by Shakespeare, Yeats, Chekov and Rupert Brooke. Those who mock or dismiss their words miss out on what we all feel about fishing but can't quite get down on paper.
